In the website a man in Bali is shown playing Veena; a close up of the Veena is also given. Can someone throw more light on Veena playing in other countries?

That's not a veena in the picture. It's a sitar. Huge difference.
And the man playing it is not native Balinese but some westerner. The sitar is a fashionable "new age"/hippie instrument and Bali readily fits in that picture too.
This whole thing has nothing to do with the cultural history of the place. If I try hard I am sure I can find pictures of tabla players in the Mojave desest of California
