Ah
Like an oaf i was roaming the streets back last summer instead of paying attention to this forum and this discussion. If i was even a millionth as poetic as CML - i would compose a lament - that describes the pleasure of having found this forum (and this thread), but not soon enough. Maybe, just maybe someone will be magnanimous to upload the music discussed for my sake (and for all the others who were roaming the streets last summer instead of....)
An (almost) complete list of all the viruthams uploaded in this thread. If you can, please re-upload them kindly.

dont lose heart.we can start Viruttam 2nd thread after the threads on gnb and Syama sastri taper down..
Rest assured that we have more virutttam ammunition in stock ,, in a much more organised manner.
as far as the older links are concerned, someone else has to help you.I do not have those tracks in the edited and cut versions..

ksrimech, arasi , can you throw more light on the pAsuram nadantha kAlkal nonthavO?
It was tuned in Sindhu Bhairavi by T.K.Rangachari ,I have heard Vairamangalam rendering it, used to be very touching, even without following the meaning completely.
Can anybody re post the KVN viruTams

The verse in question is from the tiruccanda viruttam of tirumazhisai AzhwAr
naDanda kAlgaL nondavO? naDunga j~nAlam EnamAy |
iDanda mey kulungavO? vilangu mAlvaraiccuram |
kaDanda kAl paranda kAvirik kuDandaiyuL |
kiDandavARu ezhundirundu pEsu vAzhi kESanE || (61)
arasi, "naDanda kAlgaL nondavO" sounds like a mixture of haLegannaDa and tamizh. Should it not be "nondanavO?" Is "nondavO" poetic licence or a recognised grammatical construction?

Shrikaanth Sir and CML Sir,
Here it is only nondavO.
nondukoLLudal is to feel pain, in body or mind. Here the reference is to the pair SArangApANippErummAL's feet/legs
Some more corrections made:
naDanda kAlgaL nondavO? naDunga j~nAlam EnamAy |
iDanda mey kulungavO? ilangu mAlvaraiccuram |
kaDanda kAl paranda kAvirikaraik kuDandaiyuL |
kiDandavARu ezhundirundu pEsu vAzhi kEsanE || (61)
Interestingly, Sri T.K.Rangachari set this pasuram and the next pasuram (no. 62) in Sindhu Bhairavi. I think I have TMK singing it. Will upload it in the evening along with the meaning.

I got it!
'nondavO' is a derivative form similar to 'nondanavO' or 'nondaduvO' as derived from the word 'nondal' meaning hurt!
'nOdal' is the abstract noun form of hurt or pain
'nonda' is the past participle ' was hurt'
'nondavO' is the derived imperative 'did it hurt?'
Similar import is 'nondanavO' (plural here relates to two legs) or
'nondaduvO' (singular?)

naDandavO?--either it is poetic license or, as in spoken tamizh, our habit of not using the plural for a pair of things (cheruppu engE? not cheruppugaL and thus--shoe engE?) perhaps goes back a long way!
'Your lifting, splitting the earth as a boar (Enam)--did it make you tired and it makes you shake?--that's why you are resting?' This is quite common with those who wield words--this process of relating to associative words sub-consciously. churam also means fever and he uses the word immediately.
pEsu+Azhi kEsanE!--speak, kEshan (kEshavan) who sports the wheel (Azhi) or the one who resides in the Azhi (sea).
Did he walk a desert or arid land (churam is also forest).
Great verse!:) from tirumazhisai AlwAr to the one who resides in kumbakONam!:)

Digression - Here is a wonderful slokam (not viruttam) by RNK. http://www.sangeethapriya.org/Downloads ... Slokam.mp3 - The more I listen to RNK, the more I get addicted. There is something timeless & magical to RNK..
There is a wonderful viruttam by DKP in Salutations volume 2 - A must for any viruttam connoiseur..
Then there is the evergreen Viritha Senjadaiyada by Musiri. Once I got the cassette, I was not able to stop rewinding and listening to it umpteen number of times

arasi,DRS,ksrimech,CML ,thanks a lot ,waiting for TMK’s rendering of that particular pAsuram,as promised by ksrimech.Meanwhile I found out this from www.vasumathi.net
The late veteran T. K. Rangachari, who filled auditoria with his resonant, gamaka oriented music, was an ardent fan of the pasurams and, is perhaps most responsible for integrating the pasurams into the concert pattern. His concerts were never complete without them. Noted vocalist Vairamangalam Lakshminarayanan recalls his guru, Rangachari’s, predilection for pasurams. "All his kutcheris had a number or two, without fail. How many beautiful pieces he has composed and in such apurva ragas. I wouldn’t be able to describe his genius. His Vaadinen Vaadi in Amir Kalyani, is still fresh in one’s mind"

Radhakrishnan Sir,
Sorry for taking so long. I had to run between inspection, work and school. I have been busy past weekend. I have now uploaded the Pasuram in rapidshare. Here, TMK singing the pasuram in Sindhu Bhairavi. Of course the pronounciation is not that good, I have to say.
http://www.cmana.org/cmana/rafiles/TMKrishna.mp3
Arasi, I dont think churum goes by fever or forest and Azhi kEsanE goes by the same meaning as kEsavan or one with thick black curly hair. I will type the word by word meaning when I get the time this week.

This Bhajan by Sant.Khalas was also sung by MSS in many concerts and it is featured in her D.D. archives video.arasi wrote:A few corrections? Ravi would know better:
Since the second line speaks of jhUT (lies),
the third line should read satya vachan (words--true words--truth). Why have you given up truth?
1) is it dil lalchAkar?
2) khalasa??

Viruttams.........am surprised that there is no mention of Sethalapathi Sri Balasubramaniam, affectionately known as Balu Mama.
Being a tamizh teacher at Ramakrishna School, each one of his viruttams was a gem.
He was a direct disciple of Papanasam Sivan. His knowledge of tamizh will often get known by the elongation (Nedil in Tamil) and shortening (Kuril in Tamil) of the words used most appropriately without even the slightest loss of meaning. Many have confessed to have learnt and learnt to sing viruthams from this man, who unfortunately is not with us now. The same virutham would begin with say a karahrapriya, slide to Khamas or Saveri, glow elaborately to Harikhambhodi and sign off in style with a glorious Behag. More will come.........

On the Bhava and emotional content of Vrittams, iam reminded of an incident concerning MSS and the review that appeared nearly forty years before.MSS and TS a the behest of Kanchi Mahasvamigal had arranged a Shanmatha conference in late sixties. On the concluding day there was a concert by MS.She was so involved in her singing and everybody in the audience were so carried away that reviewers mentioned that "What the galaxy of Vidwans had lectured on dais had just been demonstrated as a svaanubhavam by the devotional outpourings of MSS. Mss always used to select appropriate vrittams from ancient classical textsrshankar wrote:This whole thread on viruththams has been very enlightening. As a long time fan of SSI and MSS, I always thought that viruththams were used instead of a short 'rAg AlAp', and sung as a prelude to a krithi that would invariably mimic the 'BAva' expounded in the viruththam. However, I now realize that viruththams can be sung in rAgamAlikA, and can be 'stand-alone' pieces in a concert.
WOW!
Thanks to everyone for such wonderful service: 'dhorakunA ituvanti sEvA?'

we have discussed him here.
http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=1603&p=1
However I must admit that , with so many great stalwarts in CM , our picking up an artist for discussion sometimes resembles the manner in which our Grannies knitted sweaters.Taking it up on a sudden impulse, dropping it after some progress when diverted with some other chatter around , only to pick it up again.
Yes Sethalpatti's Viruthams had an etheral quality .Maybe we should get back to this thread with more seriousness.

Great topic, i just love it... Please don't forget the great viruttams of MDR. He includes one viruttam, pretty elaborate in each of his concert!! Also the great DKP!!
I am planning to do a project on viruttams, collecting all viruttams - non-commercial ones.. I will do it soon, may be in a months time

Kannadasan's Tamil translation of these two verses is given below - English translation is also given below -
O Abhirami! You are the Goddess of the universe; You are the Sakti (power) of Brahma (Brahmi) and Vishnu (Narayani); You are wielding elegantly the five kinds of arrows in Your hands; You are the Sakti of Sambhu (Sambhavi); You are Sankari (One bestows auspiciousness); You are the beautiful (dark-blue hued) (Syamala); You wear Sesha in your fingers (as ring); You are Malini; You are Varahi; You are Soolini; You are daughter of Mathanga Rishi; You have as all these forms; You are the origin; therefore, I seek refuge at your holy feet; those (feet) are my protection.
Brahmi - Narayani - Some of the many names of mother - particularly Nava durga.
O Abhirami! In You, Siva - one who destroyed the wicked (not having the grace) demons who had taken abode in tripura - and Vishnu (Mukunda) sought refuge; In this World, the devotees who seek refuge in You will not be subjected to death and re-birth (You will bestow deliverance on them).
