tillana

Post by bharatanatyamrasika »

I saw and heard this lovely tillana.
It was in ragamalika. It started with
dhim dhim dhim udana dhim tirana
nadruda dhim tana tirana.
there were mohanam and hindolam swaras that I recognized but i did not know the other ragas. :(
there was no sahitya, only sollus and swaras.
Is this common in tillanas?
Could you please give me the lyrics and ragas for this tillana and the name of the composer and also tell me where i can find the audio?
also tell me of any other tillanas without sahitya?
thank you very much. :)

I was under the impression that sahitya comes into tillanas only for the charnam --- but I'm posting this to see if I am right or not!

There is usually a short sAhitya for a tillAnA. If you let us know where you heard/saw this being sung it would help. Thanks.

It was a live program with several young bharatanatyam dancers doing short pieces. The tillana was the last piece performed by a young energetic teenager - it was about 5 minutes long and well executed. the music was from a cd - it was sung beautifully by a lady(I dont know who but it might even have been MLV, I am not sure though - so sorry)
And yes i have usually seen sahitya for the charanam in a tillana(sometimes short sahityas in the pallavi and anupallavi too) but this had no sahitya at all. Was it truncated by any chance - it didnt seem to be though -there was music at the beginning(maybe a movie?) but the end flowed quite smoothly, there was no abruptness to it). Hope this helps.
Thank you again for all the interest you take to help us rasikas.

There is a ragamalika thillana by Dhanayudapani Pillai that starts in Hindolam and has mohanam, vasanta, darbari kaanada and Kalyani. There is a short sahitya though.

Thank you Sreenadh. This is it! :D
It was choreographed differently but it was definitely this tillana.
Was there no sahitya since it was composed for a hindi movie?
Are there other tillanas without sahitya?
What are the other ragas besides hindolam and mohanam and may I have the lyrics Lakshman sir?
From one of the posts below the youtube video i gather it was composed by Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai. Is this correct?
Since it is a movie song i should be able to find the audio easily, I think?
One thing I loved about the video was the orchestra accompanying Kamala Lakshman, the dancer, was an all woman orchestra and
this is a black and white movie! Do you know who these ladies are?
Also I saw rather disapproving comments about the spinning/rolling on the floor by the dancer. Is that frowned upon?
However i have seen youtube videos where bharatanatyam dancers spin on the floor though on the knees. Is that considered ok?
Here is Mythili Prakash 3:10 to 3:56 doing shivamayam and spinning on her knees on stage for shivamayam at about 3:20
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mhqUma22hI
Is this considered kosher? It looks very impressive!
Again thank you, thank you. :D

Dear bharatanatyamrasika,

You're welcome, and glad you enjoyed the clip!

You clearly are mistaking me for an expert :) Sorry, but I just happened to recall that movie dance - my actual knowledge in dance is close to zero. I think your explanation is most probably right - they probably left out any sahityam to avoid confusing/turning-off Hindi audiences. Most other tillanas I heard do have a line or two of saahityam.
