kritis, ragas, artists not heard very frequently
i am starting this thread with a clipping of Bangalore S Sankars rendering of a kriti in kalyani-Srungapuradheeswari sarade-
as we come across such kritis/artists, one is forced to look for further information on these.
also for AIR Program announcements which go like this" doreswami Iyengar will next present a composition of Subbaray sastri in the raga... set to ... Thaal" making us miserable.
So feedback in this forum would help liberate all these track tags from their bond of anonymity ..
Hopefully this thread will throw more light on such kritis, artists like manakkal rangarajan, pudukode krishnamurthy,Pathamadai, VV sadagopan, angamali KJ Jose,
disciplines like konakkol, etc...

Here are some links to Shri Pathamadai Sundaram Iyer rendering Dikshitar's Kamalamba Navavarana Kritis.
[rapidshare links deleted]
I got this from uploads on the sruthi-laya yahoo groups in 2001 when the group was a very active focal
point for sharing music. Unfortunately, Shri Krishnamoorthy Shyam, who originallay uploaded this set was
unable to get the Kalyani / Punnagavarali / Sri raga kritis (much to his, mine and others' regret).
If anyone here can somehow unearth these missing kritis that would be awesome!

You people are absolutely wonderful! Words fail me...I have been looking for Sangeetha Samrajya for a while, esp. because I promised a lady that I would help her with the Chittaiswaram. Thank you!
BTW, who composed this piece - is it available in the published form anywhere (with notation)? Did the composer compose the Chittaiswaram or did someone else add that on?
Abadri, could you please tell us(me?) more about Pathamadai Sundaram Iyer? I have a heard of a Pathamadai Krishnan, but Sundaram Iyer.....Thank you for sharing this artist's renditions.
Again, many thanks for this spirit of selfless sharing.

Chithra,
Unfortunately I don't have much info on Shri PSI.
Here's what Shri Krishnamurthy Shyam was able to tell me
Unfortunately, I don't have Pathamadai Sundaram Iyer's rendition
of the Kalyani, Sri and Punnagavarali kritis. Believe me, I searched
high and low for them! Since I'm told that PSI learnt directly from
the Muthuswamy Dikshitar sishya parampara the "vazhi" is quite
authentic.
Google search gives us only indirect links. He's called an elite musician and is listd as a guru for other folks, but no direct
biographical info is available.
A google search for "pathamadai sundaram iyer" gave this link:-

http://www.indiamusicinfo.com/cgi-bin/v ... ts&id=1075
Not much info to go by! sorry, I can't provide more details.
Now, I'm just waiting for one of the resourceful folks here to come up with the 3 missing tracks!

Thank you all for responding to my queries - really appreciate your help and the info.
Lakshman:
I thought the chittaiswaram may have been composed by Sri Lalgudi - it had his signature! BTW, is Sri Ramamurthy a contemporary composer?
For another Mohanakalyani song, Siddhivinyakam, by HMB, I have heard two different chittaiswarams, in Sudha R's and M. Santhanam's renditions. Any idea of their author - I doubt if it is HMB.
Thanks,
Chithra

Thank you, Sri CML , for your witty response - I feel better now. Hope to belong here. I thought I had offended everybody by appearing to be greedy for downloads. In a way I am (only for veterans of the golden days of yore), but mostly I am not. Mere acquistion leads only to clutter, not development and refinement. I am interested in the latter, for which one must listen to music with one's heart and mind.
Anyway, thank you all.
Chithra

Thanks meena
I heard 'kAgineleyAdi' as 'kaanchi nilayaadi' and thought it was on Kanchi KaamakShi and go toally fooled.
Perhaps if DRS gets to read this he can tell us the historical background of this lyric.
Karnatik site lists it as ranjani but Kalyani looks pretty good. Do we have a writeup about this Shankar on the net?

Dear Kulkarniji,
Thank you so much for the kritis rendered by Bangalore Shankar. I find myself listening to the Kalyani Srungapurasheeshwari almost everyday! Its so well sung and as you said he is so refreshing and in a simple way almost!
Please keep them coming!
Lakshmanji had already told me the composer's name. Actually in my earlier post, instead of the composer I meant to ask if anyone had the lyrics to that Kalyani piece - Srungapuraadheeshwari? Instead I bungled and asked for the composer when Lakshmanji had already provided it!
Does anyone have the lyrics to that song?

coolkarni
The meaning you have given is fine. sankar is an excellent artist. Hi singing is marked by bhAva His rendition of dEvaranAmas is paricularly good. Also, I have much enjoyed his cocert rendition of "O rangaSAyi" in that majestic and leisurely pace.He had rendered"manava nilisuvudu" and "SrIpatiyu emage" etc in the "haridAsa namana" series in Bangalore. As you have mentioned, he is a very simple man easy to approach. By the way Im still awaiting your email.
CML
Im not aware of any specific background to "manava nilisuvudu".

salahu+enna+tAye
salahu is protect, nurture. The breadth of meaning of this one kannaDa word is very broad. It is a beautiful word. It is salupu in telugu. enna is me. tAye is of course mother.
"nurture, protect, care for me o mother". salahu cannot be satisfactorily translated to English. This reminds me of another verse from kumAravyAsa bhArata where there is a pun on the word "sAku".sAku an mean enough as well as nurture/care for(verb). In the udyOga parva, when kRShNa gives Arjuna the choice of otin either for the yAdava armed forces or Himself as a non-fighter, arjuna chooses Him sayin "kRShNa nInE sAku"
Heres the full verse

dhareya sampadavilladaDaviya

"sAki salahu "is often used together in kannaDa.
"varava koDu" was composed by kanakadAsa o SAradAmbe when he went to SrngEri. The song is a beautiful description of the mother in a simple language. It brings out the best of poet kanaka.

wanted to know if the following clip is a vasudevachar composition.
http://rapidshare.de/files/3124463/Sri_ ... a.MP3.html
also it would be fine if someone can initiate a discussion on this composer and his well known compositions.
(the threads on the composers is certainly doing wonders in honing our knowledge of non trinity composers-)
