AP: An alternate explanation could be: The fish-eyed SivakAmi forgettingherself lifted her slender feet and danced with a smile.
(I do not find it that appropriate since this is about Siva's dance---but it is something to consider)

I had the same doubt as you did , I think. I can construe the "sivakAmi tanai maRandu" in two ways: "sivakAmi-tanai maRandu" forgetting Sivakami, which makes AP run into P well; but makes bad interpretation: Siva forgetting Sivakami?? The second way is "sivakAmi tanai-maRandu", which is what I took as reasonable and that is how the singer sings. In that case pallavi describes Siva dancing and AP describes pArvati dancing. Anyway, the song is sung very well. I am not qualified to comment on the dance.
I heard the 'bUthagaNangaLum muRuvalODADa' a second time after your post. I got it right.

This makes some sense. However, the singer did not sing this way. Especially "punnagiyuDan ADa" and "poR padumai" were not heard. The singer sang ".....pAvaiyar sevvAyAl paNNisaittE pADa". Also it was not sung as "mangai oru Baaganaai" but as "mangai sivakAmiyuDan" and so many other changes were there.sathirdance wrote:The lyrics of

The master track I have of "Yaar Adinaar" has the words as I gave them.
Untill his demise in 1999 I have recorded many Bharatanatyam songs with this great vocalist, Madurai T. Sethuraman. Yaar Adinaar was one of those tracks. And it is he who gave me the lyrics.
The vocalist or someone else in the YouTube video must have heard the song somewhere, wrote it down and gave his own understanding of the words as he heard them or didn't hear them. Pulling it of YouTube is again the same thing.

I was also interested in knowing the composer's name if you know it.

Per Sathirdance's posting of the lyrics, it is Sivan who does the dance and not SivakAmi.
Now that you bring up two different songs (possibly), it is all up in the air.

If mella is looked as an adverb, instead of an adjective, 'mellaDi tUkiyE' will mean that 'Siva lifted (tUki) his foot (aDi) slowly/gracefully (mella)', and the size of Siva's foot, slender or otherwise will not matter. I think E_S took this tack when he said 'softly' - since 'soft' and the tANDava of Siva can be considered oxymoronish, I think mella in this context means slow/controlled yet powerful and graceful.

mel (soft or tender) is an adjective and coupled with aDi will compound to mellaDi (soft or gentle foot)
mella (softly, slowly) is an adverb which modifies the verb "tUkki". If mella is compounded with "aDi tUkki" then the whole phrase will look like "mella aDi tUkki" and not like "mellaDi tUkki". That is my take on Thamizh grammar.
Perhaps Rajani can explain the difference.
