In this exercise, let us also distinguish raga chAya vs scale basis mela fitting. When we say it reminds you of a raga, it has to pattern match to that raga intuitively and not through swara analysis. For example, I assume what keerthi says is about swara analysis and fitting it into a Mela rather than the prayer directly invoking those raga memories. Keerthi please correct if I am misinterpreting.
In some cases, there may not be much of a difference between the two.
We always have the misra option
We can call is misra mAyAmALava GowlA

Thozhugai -- ragam,
Sri Madurai G.S.Mani, in our forum concert has clearly demonstrated the origin of the ragam in Muslim Thozhugai. The ragam used is Mayamalavagoulai.
The download link is given below.

There was a very informative programme on POdigai in which
Dr.Pramila Gurumoorthy discussed different ragams and their origins.
She also mentioned in her lecture (conducted at Tatvaloka by Carnatica)
about the Makhab... in my notes i have something that says 64 srutis...
but am totally confused now.
She spoke about the Samagana,Gregorian chants and this Islamic Makhab and
then told us about 3 notes
-Udata ,Anudata and Swarita.
