Sometime ago, there was a discussion about mastering Brigas (see http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php? ... ihas.html). srkris mentioned that there are excercises called "Briga Sadhaka Varase" that were published in Panchapeksha Iyer's "Ganamrutha Bodhini".

When I was organizing my books yesterday, what should I find but the very book that srkris had mentioned! And I had forgotten that I possessed that book :)

Since Briga Sadhaka Varase is hard to find, I thought it might benefit students if I posted them here, but I am not sure about copyright issues.

Can musical excersices like Briga Sadhaka Varases published in a book be shared freely on a forum like this? Does copyright apply here?

Please let me know.

Posting fascimile from published copyrighted books without permission is prohibited. But if the material is not copyrighted it can be posted independantly....

If I recall brigha exercises follow the structure
RSS, GRR, MGG, PMM, DPP, ... right to the upper mA and then descend in reverse back down the scale.
or
S,RSS, R,GRR, G,MGG, M,PMM, P,DPP, ... etc

They can be practiced in akAram in faster speeds and in various melakartha rAgas

Hi everyone,
Sorry about the delay in posting the excercises. I shall do so very soon. My schedules allow me very little free time, so I often cannot keep promises :(

Give me a week and I shall post it here.

I'm trying to type the excercises into a document but I can't figure out how to put a dot over a character (to indicate that it has to be sung in the upper octave).

The character map utility in windows doesn't have diacritical characters for S, R, G, M, P, D, N :(

Any helpful tips?

shameless plug for my software: You could try http://arunk.freepgs.com/wordpress/cm-typesetter/about - although for the purposes of this thread, it may be overkill (as some learning curve maybe required). I also thought there was a font that handles atleast the dots (mohan?)

You can downoad the Windows font called Swaram. I have developed this font to enable dots below and above the swaram.
Download it at

Thank you, Arun and Mohan. I have downloaded and installed Mohan's Swaram font. This is just what I needed. Great work! I'm typing up the excercises now. Hope to complete them in a couple of days and upload them.

When posting documents using the swaram font, be sure to make a PDF file and in the PDF options choose the "Embed Fonts in document" (or something similar to this) option. This will ensure that people who read the document and don't have the font installed on their computer will be able to see the special characters.

Hi all,
At last, I managed to type out all the exercies :) Sorry for the delay. With my daily schedule running well into the night, I hardly get much time. :(

Anyway, get the PDF from here:

Let me know if you find anything wrong and I will correct it and upload again.
