Song suggestions to sing at my wedding?

Hello Rasikas,

I'm getting married in July. Both my husband-to-be and I decent singers and we thought it would be nice to sing a few songs together at the wedding. We're trying to come up with good light classical (or semi-classical) songs (with good meaning) to sing. We don't want to sing heavy classical as it might not go with the light mood of the functions.

So far we're thinking about:

1) Radha Samedha Krishna - Misra Yaman
2) Govardana Giridhara Govinda - Darbari Kanada

Please give us your suggestions for songs, we'd appreciate any ideas/suggestions.

A beautiful song of Purandara dAsa sung beautifully by Sheela. Tres tres traditional in content! kELa bEkammma can be sung as kELa bEkappa here and there--and it will be fine for today's kids. Of course, the modern brides may find a few pieces of advice a bit unreal. That's why I said--an appa at the end might do it!

Madhuvanthi: Congratulations!

Which part of the wedding do you think you two will get a chance? Just curious. Before and after the muhurtham time is usually packed with scheduled activities and ceremonies. The Unjal time singing is usually taken up by others and you will be upsetting them if you grab the 'mike' then

That leaves nalangu which will be a great time. I hear that there is an evolving custom of playing anthAkshari among the two sides. All the excellent suggestions people have made may fit in with such fun activities. May be you two can sing at the beginning, middle and end.

If you have no problems with hindi songs, then, perhaps, on the "Nichyadhartham" on the eve of the wedding, there is bound to be a "sangeeth nite"? I would suggest that on that evening both you and your husband-to-be sing the song from "Parneetha".... PIYA BOLE...PIYU BOLE...

Thanks everyone for the wonderful suggestions! I didn't have internet access till now and am just reading all the posts.

Since a lot of people in my family as well as in my would-be's family are musically inclined/talented, we are having a pre-Nichyathartam Sangeet program where our family members and friends will each take the stage and perform a song or two. The two of us are also planning to sing a couple of songs then - one semi-classical and one film song. For the film song we've chosen 'Narumugaiye' from the film Iruvar. There should also be some singing during the Valayadal, the Antakshari idea is great.

I love the raga Madhuvanti, hence my forum id - my real name's Sowmya

Our wedding is this coming weekend, will let all of you know how the Sangeet program goes!
