Talking of the names of years, I am reminded of our calendars... the lunisolar one (used across India in Panchangas) and the solar one (used only in a few states).
The TN Govt has decided a few years back that the traditional new year has to be celebrated on Pongal (i.e Makara Sankranti), the first day of Uttarayana (northward movement of the sun between Makara Sankranti and Karka Sankranti).
Do we really have anything to celebrate other than Vishu today?

Our tv channels, especially SUN and Kalaignar, who took the decision to start the new year from Pongal, are celebrating with a new name chittirai tingal tirunal, as usual with patti manrams and plenty of cinemas , as they do not want to lose the revenue due to advertisements.
when you do not want to refer to 14/4 as Tamil new year, why celebrate it at all?. No special programmes for AMBEDKAR,EXCEPT A HOLIDAY gobilalitha

puttANDu nalvAzhttukaL to you and yours!
Happy vishu to the ones who celebrate it!
Wishing everyone and their families a year filled with great music, good health, and an uninterrupted pursuit of happiness and contentment.
Sri TKB - why is it belated? I thought that both vishu and tamizh new year's day were to be celebrated on the 14th (tomorrow for us), although, the actual start of the month is/was on the 13th.

Happy new year to everyone celebrating souramAna new year!
BTW - here is a post (not so musical, but) explaining the astronomical reason why today is considered as the beginning of a new year, and how it does not fall on vishu now anymore.
