The original was by Susheela and PB Srinivas in 'MaNaalanE Mangayin bhAgyam'. The hindi version is dubbed and of course Lata and Rafi have not done full justice...
I have heard the original "Thesulavuthe" (by Ghantasala and P Suseela, no PB Sreenivos), but I would have to disagree with you on the effect... the Hindi version is simply better, no question about that. Maybe it's because of Rafi and Lata. Maybe its the use of tabla and hindustani ragas with a carnatic style of delivery, I am unable to pinpoint the exact reason.
Since you mentioned they havent done full justice, I listened to both versions back to back now, and still i find the Hindi version better.
I agree Kuhu kuhu sounds much better. The voice control and fidelity in executing that neat-sounding up and down fast traversal is done much better by Latha-Rafi. Is it possible that for the Hindi version, the music director made it sound more HMish? It sounds great.
Also, in the tamil version, the fit of the lyrics to the melody and the beat boundary sounds complicated/contrived. Is the tamil version the original or there is an original Telugu version?
I guess the original is Telugu version. The Tamil is a close copy. Of course the raga is Sohini and Latha is expected to do full justice. But to me Susheela sounds a tad better. Both versions will fail if we use hamsanandi as the measring scale since the light music does not fit the CM style. Ghantasala is equally a veteran whose voice has more of the bass and rolling melody in comparison wth Rafi (IMHO).
