Hi there,

Are there any nice renditions (specifically looking for varnams/krithis) in rAga nArAyaNagauLa available? Can anyone point out where one can find an elaborate treatment of the same?

Let me kickoff this thread with an audio interview of TN Krishnan. In this clip, he plays a varnam (pallavi, anupallavi and ciTTasvarams only) after around 1/4th of the total duration:

could anyone confirm that this IS nArAyaNagauLa?

There is a Varnam in this ragam - I have heard MDR's rendition of it.
Also, Dikshitar's "Shri ramam" is a masterpiece: Semmangudi used to sing it in his concerts.

There is a krithi (lambOdara pAhimAm -- nArAyaNagowLa -- misra tripuTa) of Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar that was posted in this forum last year. I can post that krithi if you are interested.

Also, the rAga lakshaNa (nArayaNagowLa - kEdAragowLa) is explained in Sri S Ramanathan's lecture demonstration available at

Shri Semmangudi's graceful rendition of Shri Raamam with swaraprastharas at the Nanganallur Hanuman temple concert was the first revelation for me to this divine raga. The great Maha Vidyanatha Sivan was said to have rendered this raga for 2 consequtive days at Krishnan Temple near Muthyalpet in a musical contest.

The treatment given for this raga in Shri Raamam shows that this raga has immense scope for eloboration otherwise Shri Dikshithar would not have given such an extensive treatment with vilamba kaala and madhyama kaala phrase.

I am yet to come across one eloborate alapana in Narayanagowla. Madurai Somu has rendered kadalevaadu with a short alapana in his gramaphone album of the late 70s.

Kulkarni sir, Do we have a Narayanagowla alapana from any of the stalwarts?

Yes, I would appreciate it if you could. All I have heard till now are short renditions of either "kadale vadu" or "shri ramam ravikula"...

Smt. Sowmya performed an RTP in Narayanagaula at the Academy a couple of years back. Chennaivasis having some clout at the Academy can try and procure us a copy! I have also heard a recording of one of her concerts in the US (I forget the venue) where she prefaced "Kadale Vadu" with a fairly elaborate alapana. The only other elaboration I've heard is Voleti-garu's. MDR of course was a master of the Narayanagaula Ata Tala Varnam and SSI's Shri Ramam is unforgettable.

Coolkarni/Others,

Is there any recording of Tiruvottiyur Tyagier's varnam " Maguva" ? If so can it be posted, preferably Semmangudi's rendition.

The varNa is credited to Tiruvettiyur Tyagayya in SSP. In Ganamrta Varna Malika it is credited to Vinai Kuppier.

MIO also has another rendition of the Varnam, "Maguva".

You would do well not to patronize MIO (MusicIndia Online) and download from there. The website has been putting up unauthorized downloads, as has been known for quite a while... now finally someone has had the courage to bell the cat. See this:

Yeah, I did read that fascinating article, truely. Though I'm cynical about one aspect. Was CDW oblivious to the fact that MIO existed (yeah...right!) or did they choose to prosecute after MIO recently provided direct links to download their stuff? I really don't know. Still, more than a fortnight since this "case", it's interesting that MIO is (still) streaming its audio like it used to.

Regarding Sri Ramam: I am looking for translation of last four line of Caranam begining with "Suchara Chapa" and ending with "jala niditham".

Dasa Vadana Bhanjanam: does this refer to killing of Ravana?

"Daanava Kula bheekram? Which kula does this refer to? Surya Vamsaha?

Generally, Rama's Sons are referred colloquially as Lava and Kucha. Any comments on why the poet starts with Kucha Lava.

If this is not the right forum, perhaps you can lead me to the right one.
Thanks
sriram

Daanava Kula bheekaram - "Causing fear to the family of demons" (lineage of Danu & Kashyapa) - Danu was a daughter of Daksha.

Kucha Lava - Poetic licence (rhyming with next line)

Dasa vadana bhanjanam = destroying the ten-faced one.

It is "kuSa lava", not kuca lava (Pleaaase!)

kuSa maintains the dvitIyAkShara prAsa as it occurs prior to it;- daSarathAtmajam
