Was listening to a wonderful concert of Gayatri Venkatraghvan on DD today and wondered, as I do everytime I tune into CM on DD, about the reason for the jarring lag between the audio and the video...if I look at the TV for even a second, my taalam goes for a toss!

This doesn't seem to be an issue with most other forms of music presented on TV (antaakshari, MTV and so on) and happens almost without fail in DD's CM presentations? Is it a technical glitch in the Chennai studios or technology caught in a time-warp?

vijay,
you are correct; sometimes the lag is so jarring, I tend to close my eyes. It affects the concentration so much. I really wish they do something about it.

Well youtube is for amateurs so it is forgivable....you do expect a little more from the national broadcaster

Not just DD, editors at most mainstream media houses can't get the audio-video sync exactly right when the mastering of a video recording is done. The loss of sync is not perceptible (rather not so jarring) in film / light music but it affects CM badly, esp bcos the taalam is overtly displayed by the artistes. As an experiment, try shooting a CM performance on a handycam and converting the DV tape to DVD or VCD... you'll understand the difficulty of syncing to the exact frame accuracy.
