The Carnatic music world has taken a clue or two from the IPL (Indian Premier League). Following the huge success of the 20:20 cricket formula of IPL, We The International Society For Laya Awareness (ISLA), a Chennai-based organization engaged in teaching Carnatic/classsical/devotional/instrumental music to children, promoting carnatic music among youngsters and laymen through novel concepts, have come out with 40:40 programme of our own to discover and highlight musical talent. In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Society has decided to organize 40 concerts of 40-minute duration each for three days from August 15 to August 17 at Ragasudha Hall in Mylapore. This three-day Carnatic music contest will provide musicians of all sorts in the age group of 15-35 a platform to showcase their wares in Carnatic music. Based on the competitors’ performance, the we have to pick six winning teams for cash awards. We are keen to ensure that 40:40 event does not turn into a non-serious exercise. ISLA has, in fact, decided to offer the six winning teams an opportunity to perform in the December Music Festival in Chennai under the auspices of the International Society For Laya Awareness.
Inviting applications from musicians in the age group of 15-35, Ghatam Suresh, founder of the Society, wants them to “Contest with your kutcheri to conquer the Carnatic charisma.â€

Curiosity struck I spoke to one of the key persons of International Society for Laya Awareness who are organizing this unique marathan series of young musicians contesting one after the other (with each other!) and learned some interesting points!
The response to their call was more than reasonable with 57 applications. The screeing committee listened to the recordings and scrutinised the bio data (some teenagers have had big brocures!) of all of them and selected only THIRTY - ten short of the 40 mark. "Nevermind! more than title we coined, we are keen on genuinely talented youngsters who want to pursue music seriously" was the reply. Convincing. This is pretty good a success for them setting a precedence of a festival-contest combine for the first time in a big way.
There are learned musicians forming the panel of judges and the Vote of the audience is given considerable weightage in determaining overall standard of the artistes.
There are strict rules on the duration, items of performance, stage discipline etc for the contestants.
I also got a provisional copy of the list of performers which I shall post seperately for the benifit of rasikas.
