The function was held at Raga Sudha Hall, Mylapore, Chennai on July 7th.

July 7th marked a year after the passing away of our Guru Sri.A.Sundaresan. he was a father figure to us and has contributed immensely to the world of carnatic music.

The function was attended by many great vidwans and vidushis ,sabha secretaries and oraganisers and rasikas and friends of the late Vidwan.

Padma Bhusan Sri.P.S.Narayanasawmy is one of our Guru’s close friends. He recounted his decades of friendship with our Guru and spoke about his scholarliness and vidwath and his unstinted effort in popularizing and teaching and notating rare kritis of the Trinity. He said that at a time when AS Sir was working in Railways and juggling teaching and taking care of his family, he still managed to write noations in his meticulous print like handwriting. He encouraged all students and Vidwans to buy the book.

Sangeetha Kala Acharya Sri.Chengelput Ranganathan received the book on release. He spoke about Sri.A.Sundaresan sir’s commitment to participating in Akandams especially at Purasawakkam and Siva Ratri Akandam at Thiruvaiyaru. He said that Sri.AS would start singing whenever there was a gap in the Akandama and could go on and on with rare hitherato unheard pieces for hours if required. He hailed Sri.A.Sundaresan sir’s skill at setting kritis to notation without unwanted sangathis.

Sri.A.Sundaresan sir’s passion for Cricket was talked about with much humour.

Cleveland Sri.V.V.Sundaram in his tribute spoke about Sri.A.S’s commitment to teaching and his perfection in notating and imparting it to students. He recollected that Sri.A.S used to say that one has to do Sadagam not only with the voice or instrument but do sadagam in the mind all the time to be a good musician.

The students handed over a small amout to Sri.V.V.Sundaram who has started a fund for helping the family of Sri.Shyama Sastri.

The book release was followed by an outstanding concert by Sri.Neyveli santhanagopalan.

The book that was released this day is an effort by the students and family in making sure that these rare pieces, reach the next generation, as desired by their Guru. It has a very aesthetically designed cover, with pictures of the Trinity which are very rare.

Karunajooda-Sri-Shyama Sastri

An out of the world concert that will be remembered by all who heard it.Those who missed this concert missed a very aesthetic, memorable concert show casing amazing vidwath and sadagam.

Every kriti stood but the Saveri ragam and swaram has to be mentioned for it’s sheer brilliance..In the Bhairavi piece three octaves of Madyamam cascaded with brilliance. The Ganavarithi piece was very appropriate to the occasion as it was one of Saint Thyagaraja’s last compositions appropriately set in Ganavarithi, meaning sea of Gana.
Sri.VittalRamamurthy sketches of ragas and his support to the vocalist was remarkable. The concert also witnessed the utmost sensitive percussion support by Mannakoil Sri. J.Balaji who seemed to anticipate the vocalist’s every move.

The concert marked amazing planning since it followed a book release function. The book released was The Rare Kritis of the Trinity , a hand notated book by Acharya Choodamani.Sri.A.Sundaresan .This book contains 46 rare compositions of which two are of Subbaraya Sastri and one Annaswami Sastri.

The book will be available at Charsur Digital Work Station, Alwarpet and Karnatik Music Book Centre,Sripuram First St,Royapettah and all leading music stores. It is priced at Rs.400 and has complete English transalation of all the notations.

Mrs.Sankari a longtime disciple of AS Sir rendered the invocation "Kayarohanesam in Devagandharam" .I will try to have it uploaded here if possible.which will give an indication of how the function was organised.!.Sri.PSN could not resist clapping who also told in his speech "Yappadi cholli koduthirukar parungal".
PSN sir recollected how late AS Sir used to insist each Vidwan to come out with new unheard kritis in each Akandam. Once he has expressed he had so many new kritis(pracharathirku varaada) and there were not much male students :PSN Sir collected all those notations and made his own disciples to learn them.(PSN Discilples forum honoured him. in one of their earlier annual events)NSG recollected how he used to advise him to be innovative in each akandam and assured that is going to be the theme of that evening concert.

SKA.Chinglepet Ranganathan mentioned he had learnt from his guru-ABS.
The programme was well attended by senior vidwans /Vidushis.The strength of the hall was full throughout from the start of the function to the end of the concert.Veena maestro Vidya Sankar was witness to the proceedings from the start to finish.

As Vasumati said, his passion for cricket was talked about with much humour. Here is an incident. He was a good friend of mine , talking while travelling by the same local every morning .Very often he used to be found missing from his seat in office listening to a running commentarry whenever , a test match was in progress, A junior officer complained abuot his absence to a senior officer .THE senior officer called him to his room, Sundaresan thought he would be reprimanded.. But to AS's utter suprise , thesenior officer asked him 'what is the score? Inform me about the progress of the match every half an hour!!! gobilalitha

My intension in posting a hilarious incident of his job in the Railways(post3) is to state that he liked good humour. All his friends were always of the view that he should have deservedly scaled greater heights as a topmost musician.. For failing to recognise his great ness the sabhas are responsible. gobilalitha

Surprised to find no mention of Gayathri Venkataraghavan. Was she not part of this?
