After the few jammy sessions and Thatwamasis concert , we are beginning to consolidate our thoughts on concerts for the remaining months in 2008 , before the onset of December Festival.

I have thought it appropriate to give a sketch of what we are thinking for 2008 and details about few programs already lined up.

2008 series is going to be, of a set of artists who have been associated with us (either directly by being members here or indirectly by interacting with us personally).
Concerts
A weekend date towards the end of June will have Ms Sowmya Presenting a Ramanathan Double Special.
Most probably it will be at Mantra's (recently refurbished ) Music Room at his home near Valluvar Kottam .This shall be a Tribute to MDR as well as S Ramanathan.
Rasikas can expect a real treat.
If Carnatica Ramanathan agrees to sing an invocation , We dont mind labelling it "Ramanathan Triple Special' :P

July will see us hosting Prema Rengaarjan.
Rasikas are welcome to get in touch with her , through Mr Rengarajan who is a member here , to make requests and give her ideas for a theme.
August September October will be reserved for Jeyasree-Jeyaraaj and Neyveli Santhangopalan , Delhi Muthukumar and Sivranjini.
G Ravikiran and Iyer Brothers,
being outstation choices ... will depend on their programs to be in Chennai
Other activities.
And one exclusive Tyagaraja Special Concert which I want to have at VGVindans Home, as a tribute to his endeavours.
And a Ramaraj Special , as and when he can coax Rajee Gopalkrishnan to sing for us.But first of all we wish that he recovers fully.
Lalgudi GJR Krishnan has kindly accepted our request to spend a full evening with Lalgudi Jayraman at their Home in T Nagar. It should happen after GJR returns from an overseas trip in about 10 days. Most likely a Sunday in the second or third week of June.

Chennai Contributors can expect me to stand with the Bowl at each concert .So please dont leave your purse behind at home.
Overseas contributors can please get in touch with Vasanthakokilam.
I am sorry for the short period of lull in activity.I dont have time at my disposal , like I used to have before and so had to wait for Mantras Home to get ready for hosting the concerts.
But the most important thing is not about the contribution. It is about making your presence felt , by Being Present at the Concert.
If I have left out any other artist here or even in Bangalore, I sincerely beg your pardon. Please do write to me and we can continue this series until we exhaust all the choices.I have not touched upon the subject of Professional Accompanists who are very active here , simply because we have never wanted to have a say in these matters. But if there is a way by which we can engage accompanists too, I would be willing to hear from them in Private.
Regards

This promises to be a terrific series - let's make coolkarni's bowl overflow (just as he makes ours overflow with music and anecdotes)...

Excellent to know that things are on the move again and fully confident in your choice of performers.

It would be nice to see a repeat by Thatwamasi.

It would also be nice if we could get-together/jam again for the less- and the un-professionals among us to have a go --- but I think this needs to be initiated by one of our main-stay jam performers when they have the time and the inclination.

I don't know how I ever missed this thread. Awesome list. Looking forward to all programs. Sowmya's kutcheri, and an evening at the legendary Lalgudi's place promise a lot.

No apologies required since there was no blunder, Coolkarniji!

I'll be in Chennai for the season and would consider it a supreme privilege to sing to the best of my limited capabilities for all rasikas.org members. Given the standard that thathwamasi has set for performances by members of this community, it will be a very hard act to follow! :)

Kulkarniji please keep us updated about the plans for the evening with Lalgudi Sir. I have plans to travel out of India for the next few weeks but if in the country, that sounds like an incredible opportunity - well worth flying down to Chennai for.

And one exclusive Tyagaraja Special Concert which I want to have at VGVindans Home, ...
Coolkarni,
I am sorry that I overlooked the topic for these days.
What a kind of honour would it be to have a concert in my home!
If Rasikas and the Artists are ready to put up with the kind of electricity tantrums in our area - Gowrivakkam (6km East of Tambaram Railway gate on the Tambaram - Velacheri Main Road), I would make every effort to host one.
A hearty welcome to one and all with folded hands.

Cool,
While we are going to miss all those grand ones in Chennai, the late November or January concert in Bangalore is supposed to be held at our place...

The astonishing thing to me from Cool's link there is that Vellore Ramabhadran is 77 years old! I wouldn't have thought him nearly 70, let alone nearly 80. There must be a potent magic in this music...

That aside, and I am delighted that we get the chance to see him play from up-close, I'm very much looking forward to that program.

How the name Erode came about - there are two versions.
This town is located between two streams (ODai) - piccaikkAran ODai and perumpaLLam ODai. Therefore this place is called 'IrODai' (two streams).
The name of Lord Siva here is 'kapAlISvara'. Therefore, the word 'kapAla' was rendered in Tamil as 'Ira ODu' - (wet skull) which over a period of time got morphed as 'IrODu' (Erode)

(Translation from Tamil by me)

Wonderful schedule. Looking forward to the first item on the bill of fare, Smt. Sowmya's concert!!!

Is there a theme planned for Sri Jeyaraaj and Smt. Jaysri's concert?

Bharath
Yes You can summarise that way, with two slots to be filled up for concerts by Prashanth and Delhi Muthukumar. One of the concerts may feature an entry of a very popular member here -in to Chennai Music scene - as a mridangam artist.
A Chap with whom you exchange sms's within the same concert hall during a concert.
Prashanth and others- Please feel free to suggest themes. That is the beauty of this series. And Of course dont forget to give me a date for your concert. You only have to space it in this schedule with a 10-15 gap between concerts.Rest we will take care.
You can also suggest a theme for the coming year.
One of the thoughts doing the rounds is a full recital by violinists whom we know mainly as accompanists, and rarely get to hear them as soloists. Maybe 4 or 5 such concerts next year.
