ragam-talam,
Thanks! Ten years do make a difference! Yet, some things remain the same.
The pictures are scattered randomly in the text and unless you go through every line, you cannot find the passage relating to the picture...

ragam-thalam; I enjoyed the article very much. It is interesting to read about where the currently in-circuit artists were in their development a decade back. Also, I found myself agreeing with Gowri Ramnarayan's passing remark about BMK ;)

Actually I found it hilarious. The exact same content would come from some critic in the next 10 years, 20 years, 30 years etc. etc. The names would change but the song will remain the same. Now you can draw your own conclusions based on that as I have drawn mine :)

(ps: I want to clarify that I really have nothing against this critic. This is more about critics in general and their role in the art form)

I've read this before - Season '99 was my first one so I can actually relate to the article ..It's Interesting to see that the names have hardly changed...add a Ranjani Gayatri/Malladis/maybe a few others and a summary of Season 2007 would not look very different except for more grey hair/balding pates (of course there have been a few lamentable losses)...OTOH a comparison b/w 1999 and 1989 would be quite stark...

1988 - 95 was the most enjoyable period for me in attending concerts. Being a bachelor and a job which allowed you to get away at 5.30 pm were a big plus. Add to that a boss who will give you a lift in his scooter and buy you dinner.

Of course the choice available was fanatastic, DKJ, KVN, SSI, Lalgudi, TNK, MSG,SB ,TNS , TVS ..

Definitely great times

Yeah, how I wish...anyway my boss is quite understanding too, when it comes to music so I am grateful...

True the late eighties/early nineties would have exciting, not least because of TNS/TVS at their prime and several other senior stalwarts still active on the concert circuit...and several artistes from Sudha/NSG onwards on the brink of stardom...

Yeah Ravi, added pounds too...except for some like Sanjay who've managed to lose as much as they'd gained...Neyveli sir has also managed to stay in shape. It is hard to believe that he is well into his forties!
