rbharath, i might have mentioned this earlier (in fact, I am alsmost certain I did correspond to you about this years ago !!) but Salem Chellam Iyengaar was also my guru

I am still trying to locate his son Balaji !

jayachAmarAja, of course you did ask me. I do remember the conversation. I dont think my guru had given any detailsn about Sri Chellam Iyengar's family. will Probably verify yet again over the weekend and let u know.

Bharathwaj, I think you (might have ??) misunderstood. When i wrote that line about still trying to locate Balaji, i was just thinking out aloud. Still, glad that it bore fruit

Chellam Iyengar is the son and disciple of Duraiswamy iyengar,who was the disciple of Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar.
He was a teacher at Kalakshetra in 1980s in the company of Vairamangalam and Pasupathy

G.Duraiswamy Ayyangar had the distinction of undergoing gurukulavasa for such a long period of twenty-two years under the distinguished Poochi Srinivasa Ayyangar that he was the natural preceptor to his son, Chellam Ayyangar. At the age of ten, Chellam Ayyangar made his debut at the Tyagaraja Aradhana at Salem starting a five-decade long musical career. Since 1940, he had given over 250 concerts on the All India Radio alone and since 1943 has been participating in the programmes of Music Academy, Indian Fine Arts Society, etc., with the accompaniment of reputed supporting artistes. His dedicated and traditional concerts are well received.

Gana Bhaskara from Bangalore Baktha Jana Sabha
Kandar Anubhuti Sikhamani from Bhavani Tirumurai kazhagam in 1966
Narada Gana by Venkataramana Bhagavatha Mahotsava Sabha, Salem in 1969
Award from the Music Academy, Madras in 1975.

He has also published a book

COMPOSITIONS OF SRIMAN POOCHI SHRINIVASA IYENGAR. Editor: Salem D.Chellam Iyengar. Higginbothams Ltd. Madras. 1982.

I am told by his son Balaji that this book is based on hand-written notes (granthm) of Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar that Salem Chellam Iyengar had in his possession.

I will be uploading some of his radio concerts by next week

I introduce myself as Sriram Gopalakrishnan, one of the many disciples of Shri. Salem D. Chellam Iyengar. I would be much obliged if someone can give me leads to get in touch with his son Balaji. I have been long out of touch with their family and feel quite guilty about it.

Also, I would be much obliged if anyone can give me links to his recorded audio / video concerts and Kandar Anuboodhi.

Dear all,

The lineage of disciples of Salem Shri. D. Chellam Iyengar runs directly from the great composer, Saint Tyagaraja himself! The lineage is a follows:

1. Saint Tyagaraja, the great composer.

2. Manambucchavadi Venkatasubbaiyyar (19th Century composer. Also, cousin of Saint Tyagaraja, whose grandson was his disciple).

3. Patnam Subramanya Iyer [1845-1902].

4. Raamanaadapuram (Pooci) Shreenivaasa Aiyyangaar [1860-1919].

5. Salem Doraiswami Iyengar (Also, father of Chellam Iyengar) [18__-19__].

6. Salem D. Chellam Iyengar [1929-1996].
