another humorous post, not to offend anybody., of late cricket, which was started in England to enjoy some sunshine after a dreary winter, later on became a gentleman's game with test matches between englandand Australia and spread to co,lonies of Britain. but to what unethical proportions like betting, fixing prices for players heads(likehuge awards for informtion on internationalcriminals), it has spread. I think of a hilarious situation, when top musicians like TNS.TVS,SUDHA,MANDOLIN SRINIVAS,(to mention a few) will be owned by big sabhas and organiztions like music academy, narada gana sabha, cleveland etc after being purchased for lakhs of rupees.. any sa bha or individuals who want to arrange their performances should bid for them, and the highest bidder will be given the chance gobilalitha,

But can a situation be imagined in which they might be bribed to sing badly? Or the instruments might be tampered with?

Oh, but I am forgetting... there is no need. We always have the sound men to ruin a concert!

While gobilalitha is being humourous here, a very similar arrangement is quite common in other fields of music. Jazz musicians, for example, are often under contract to a recording company. All public appearances must be approved by the record company (fees are not always involved, but recording rights will be negotiated).

And I must say I can see positive aspects to the "artist in residence" model. Sabhas may be able coax patrons to visit their facilities in order to listen to the famous artist, the famous artists in turn may be able to coax the sabhas to improve their facilities :/, and artists may be able to obtain a reasonable fee and not have to perform 15+ concerts in a month...

With the star cult creeping into CM ,it may not be long before we see this happening here , if it is not happening aleady!
I can understand the anguish of gn.sn42 when he feels that something as outlandish is needed to improve the facilities in the sabhas.:P

Gone are the days when artists used to sing for ice cream for their son and kalkaNDu on stage, even when it meant the wife back home was angry as hell for she had to borrow rice from the neighbours to make dinner...

'nallAr oruvar uLarEl avarporuTTu ellArkkum peyyum mazhai'.
Even if there is one person of piety, for his sake it will rain for all.

The mythological story about mInAvatAra and Noah of Ark have a grain of truth.
There are still people out there who consider music as Nadopasana - they go starving.

paddu tappaga bhajiyincu bhakta pAlanamu sEyu
tad-daya-SAlivi nIvu tyAgaraja sannuta (kaddanu)
(kaddanu vAriki kaddu - tODi)

This soil's sacredness is such that it can produce not one but a thousand Thyagarajas. It is not a wishful thinking - but my conviction.

Well said, VGV.
There was a bhArati whose wife looked for the rice she had garnered which the poet had scattered to the birds...

Even during the days of Thyagaraja, he was a rare person.Thats why they called him the 'Saint' Thyagaraja. In fact his elder brother was the true replica of the typical average person of his/any time.Human nature doesnt change with times.Time only brings out how the very same innate human nature comes out in different forms and shapes.
