there ws some criticism in an esteemed weekly ,when a young performer came to the stage wearing shirt and pants .normally performers come clad in dhoti, shirt and angavastram, or a long sherwani or jibba as we call it and dhoti . anything wrong in coming dressed in pants or jeans. gobilalitha I AM NOT AWARE WHETHER THERE WAS A DISCUSSION EARLIER ON THIS SUBJECT GOBILALITHA

normally muscians wear either khadi white shirt or silk jibba with thick jarri bordered eight cubits dhoti as mentioned by gobilatha. nothing wrong in appearing with modern dress. this dress code definitey followed by all nadhaswara vidwans even now. another interesting event i bring to the notice here. few months back in podhigai isaiyodu naan progm one rasika questioned lalgudi GJR krishnan whether is it correct to appear with thick mustache which does not suit a muscian. the moderator then at that time did not permit this question and wanted to avoid such personal reference to be answered by the guest. as such , there is nothing wrong in appearing with dress liked by the artistes. IMHO musicians can follow dress code set by stalwarts of yeaster years to maintain the tradition.

If I were GJR I would have replied that
A Thick moustache suits any one well as long as he remembers to wipe immediately after drinking a cup of Lassi or "Moru".
Gobilalitha ,
You forgot the biggest moustache of them all : Bade Ghulam Ali Khan
Let me know if you need a small video clip, to marvel at !

cool sir, yes I forgot about bade ghulam ali khan .god forbid artists coming with bermudas. this subject was chosen as to have some fun, because we are very often discussing complicated subjects, which musicologists can only understand . however, our normal mode of wearing jibba ,dhoti ,angavastrm seems to suit the august atmosphere. gobilalitha

musicians' attire is always an interesting topic to discuss....don't think this interest is new/ recent. A lucky hue of blue even got the queen of song's name to it, because she popularised a blue silk saree (referring to 'MS blue'). While some musicians choose to dress in simple white khadis others choose more colourful silks. It all adds spice and variety to a concert I think. Personally I love the colourful silk jibbas one finds at Rasi silks in Mylapore.
