Is there a recommeded type of Violin for playing Karnatik music or will any western violin work?
Also, what is the typical size of the violin that is used?

Thanks much

AFAIK Any western violin will work. You'll only have to retune the E - A - D - G to your appropriate S - P - S - P

An adult violin is called full size. For children, depending on age (and hence length of the arm), 1/4, 1/2 or 3/4 sizes are available.

Yep there is no specific "carnatic violin", any normal violin can be used.
