I wonder if any attempt has been made to trace some kind of a "family tree" equivalent of Carnatic Musicians. I am sure it would be relatively easy to go at least as far back as the Trinity if not Purandaradasa. Has any such thing been attempted/discussed?

Many years ago I put together a Guru-Sishya tree of mrudangam artsites. It is still available at:

It has not been updated for over 10 years because I used an old program to create it and was unable to add to it.

Mohan, it would be good if you could find a way to update that, there are a few names missing, including mine ;)

Excellent work Mohan! Perhaps you could update it and also work on the vocal banis...I am willing to put things together but am fairly weak on the knowledge front. Let us see if I can come up with something basic that others can add on to...do we have a good software for this purpose?

I think I did it originally in Excel but in a later version of excel it didn't work properly. Might have to start again!
