01. Pancha Mathanga (S) - malahari - MD

Personally I attended 5 RTP concerts spread over 3 days(2 on Sat, 2 on Sun and 1 on Mon-Today). I will write reviews of all 5 with a gap.
It is a joy to always hear RTP exclusive concerts. I could say RTP is one that encapsulates all the raga bhavam that is spread over different body of knowledge like krithis and a well presented RTP gives more condensed Carnatic oomph.
RTP is some thing that i have been intensely following conducted by carnatica . The first RTP was the evening 1 concert of Vishnudev with a fabulous team of HNB-Patri-KVG . To aid the momentum Vishnudev selected the first krithi and that was a pancha mAtanga in malahari , a fantastic MD krithi . Certainly the choice was great that too in the context of the RTP which we all discovered 100 mins later. I felt malahari had too short swaras ,but hey it is ok considering that he is apportioning the time for a detailed RTP. Vishnudev has a shruthi centric voice and his bhava is his pliable masculine voice .
02. RTP in Panchabhoota theme with 5 ragas (Todi + vasantha + Kalyani+nattai +Brindavana Saranga) for 50 mins
02A. Raga alapana for 19 mins alternating with vocal alpapana and violin return covering all 5 ragas -
02B. Taanam in almost all 5 ragas only for 12 mins
Raga alapana started with todi ,every thing from todi no big tara sthayi shoots.No alapana was earth shattering but was progressively felt to touch the Jeeva pidis . I felt may be nattai signal was not that strong.Taanam was also measured , characterized with near equal vocal and violin return. I felt in taanam the bhavam was not as detailed that is needed for Pallavi darbar but hey he has to chew 5 ragas so give that benefit of doubt.

02C. Pallavi and swara ragamaliga for 17 mins

The Pallavi was directed towards pancha bhoota and vishnudev gave a very great contextual explanation . He stated mainly that he would go from space to earth -stating from light to dense , he covered via air,water and fire. i am wearing my thinking hat is fire an outlier is there a light or dense dont know .
The first Pallavi line for brindavana saranga was way different , the rest of the four he had nearly the same Pallavi line with one keyword substituted to represent that applicable them
THe brindavana saranga Pallavi line was Engum Nirai nedu vAnamA moola prakrithiyai pani manamE
THe rest of the four raga Pallavi line was moola prakrithiyai pani manamE ... ullangengum vilangidum <<theeyum/neerum/kaatrum>>
I know i did not do a good job in writing the Pallavi line . ONe main reason was it was so difficult to get the words of the Pallavi line especially in the second half with a fairly high HIT beats from patri found it way too difficult to catch the line especially in the last uttarangam where during that keyword there was HIT HIT.
THe raga bhavam and rasa for brindavana saranga was exceptionally done well . For the other 4 ragas ,i felt the execution of Vishnudev needed bit more improvement . For some seconds if the percussionist did a bit of underplaying their beat would have helped . All times i did not hear the line in full especially during the second half of the pallavi line , i did not get even once what is the keyword that he is mapping to water/fire/air/earth though ragas like kalyani/nattai/vasantha/Todi were respectively mapped. I am not saying the words has to told so that i get the so called the sahitya bhavam ,i am not advocating that but it was a loss of clarity . Post tani he said he would combine he did well in todi many of the other ragas (nattai especially) were too sketchy and suggestive .
02D. Tani for 20 mins
Tani was definitely far more appreciated by all others than me possibly because Patri has a star value . I felt bit otherwise Patri doing one Mohra was quite heavy on ears possibly not that suitable for the smaller hall of sastri hall.But from start to two thirds of the tani was simply superb ,the way Patri engages with his thoppi is really impeccable. KVG played very well but the best of best accompaniment was HN Bhaskar. His sharpness to produce more sharper raga devata than vocalist came far more handy for this pancha bhoota pallavi. For the Pallavi neraval Bhaskar reinforcing the concert with kalapramanam tightness was a joy to hear.
Vishnudev and the team did one big mistake too. They excessively adjusted the microphones and lost another valuable 10 to 15 mins. That was way too long. All said if there was little more taanam that would have made me happier. All said this Pallavi has so much scope possibly he apportioning more time in one of his future concerts will be wonderful along with conscious underplay of percussion during pallavi nerval will be a pre requisite to enjoy better.
Overall an excellent concert for 1 hour and 20 mins
