Nadaswaram music always gives a unique experience in listening to Carnatic Music which is so distinct from listening to other forms of performance be it singing or instrumental. This concert by Yazhpanam P.S Balamurugan did not fail in giving the thirty odd rasikas at the Parthasarathi Swami Sabha that unique experience.
After and short and sweet Kedaram , Balamurugan started off with the Navaragamalika Varnam and did Trikalam including the Tisram .
A long alapana of Muktidayini, a derivative of Vachaspati without Rishaba followed and Karunakari Kapalini was played with Kalpana swarams.
The next piece was Engu Naan Selven in Dwijawanthi .
The main raga for the day was Natakapriya. He started initially with short phrases in the Uttaranga and moved to the Poorvanga again with short pharases and the raga was sounding like a mash up of Karaharapriya and Todi. But once he started playing the longer phrases which included both the Gandhara and Daivata in it, his Natakapriya cast off its identity crisis and started to shine with its own personality. The Kriti ‘Geeta Vadya’ was played with good Kalpana swaras with engaging rythmic patterns to sum up to which the accompanying Nadaswaram player P.S.B. Sarangan responded well . The Tani by Yazhpanam P.S Senthinathan and Yazhpanam K.S.P.Venthusan was short but had all the excitement of a typical Tavil Tani.
A short Yamunakalyani dripping in melody was played by Sarangan and was followed by Bhavayami Gopalabalam.
The recital was only for around two hours which passed off quickly largely due to the absorbing nature of the music that was delivered.
