I had to leave at the start
I wanted to hear this musician for the last few years , just heard through hearsay. I have neither heard him in a recording or not even a snippet . For many years i used to atleast take one brand new musician and this year it is C S Sajeev.
Sajeev is quite a leisurely singer and has intense sampradaya touch but felt little more drive is needed in the presentation. He has fairly intense mascular voice slight modulation had a bit of Dr Late Balamuralikrishna voice is there
Start was quite well done . Narayanagowlai start was a great one , the flagship krithi came out well with a round of little rationed swaras. HE told some time bit later that he learnt from his guru C S Jayaraman. I dont know who that is bit googling may be is he from Trivandrum(my guess), is he second generation disciple of Semmangudi and not directly through the major line of PSN is my calculated guess
The second is a bit of dampener maa kelara ended too soon . Very nice leisurely unhurried rendition of mukhari was a great drop and the krithi also was nice, felt again his swara singing needs little more rhythmic leash and quicker turns to align with taalam.
Todi alapana was quite a distilled and i enjoyed this rare neelakanta sivan. Neelakanta sivan is unquestionably a great thamizh krithi composer , may be he was born 50 years earlier when most musicians of his immediate generation had only time to learn trinity and GKB etc... The todi krithi had lot of hues where if I am wondering did Papanasam sivan took a lot of hues in some krithi of his from this rare krithi At the end of short swaras of todi , Sajeev announced his guru CS Jayaraman tuned it . some one can tell more Sajeev guru CS Jayaraman (I am sure this is not the same CS Jayaraman who sang lot of vintage thamizh film songs)
The best is the lovely rendition of karuna samudhra . Devagandhari suits the intense consistent slow or medium tempo moving style of Sajeev . Among the many devagandhari krithis this karuna samudhra has a little more musical oomph and Sajeev showed his best only here.
From the slow devagandhari to a fast moving bantureeti with a short neraval punch of rAma rama mane Sajeev did not pack adequate bantu reeti golu ecstasy. In absence of swaras konjam fell flat .I heard part of main as i had some emergency to leave . Infact this particular concert i was just around T Nagar and just had some time to be here.
V V Ravi is classical pracheena vidwan and his tone and muse was strictly classical no fusion or showing the violin instrument capability. IS the senior vidwan Parassala Ravi related to Vidushi Parassala ponnammal . He is quite a senior artist and did not have the greatest left right balance, but there were pockets of great play that lifted the concert . He had a younger vidwan , assuming he was his sishya , Arun Chandrahasan played very well and his roll had few pockets of great intensity and paddhati touch. I will watch out for Arun Chandrahasan as he is playing very well.
Special Shout out for Delhi Sundarrajan /Delhi Muthukumar and team
------------------------------------------------------------------
I did not know maarga though in the last few years i have only seen outside
1. They conduct 7 concerts a day like a typical Nungambakkam Cultural Academy from 9 am to 9 pm with a typical morning and two evening slots and intermediately the 4 slots encourage talents
2. They dont have the call and they rent or get sponsors for this hall in RKM School in burkit road . Parking is also there for atleast 75 cars .THe hall is TAG hall , the same person TAG RT Chari may have given the dole to build this auditorium ,he has done the same for PS High School where Tag Dakshinamoorthy auditorium is there
3. Delhi Sundarrajan along with Delhi Muthukumar and many have tirelessly worked to create this festival for 5 to 7 days every year with atleast 49 slots is surely a miracle . This hall is great you can walk from T Nagar bus stand and also from mambalam station , access to station is key as such some one in pallavaram chromepet can reach in 25 mins and walk 5 mins to the auditorium
Best wishes for maarga to grow more.
Overall a good to very good concert by Sajeev for the near 2 hour concert (listened to only 90 mins)
