There are only two reasons primarily for any one to come to CM Capital Chennai during December season . One is frequency and the other is assortment of concerts . Certainly for many the social angle and the canteen is also a necessary pre requisite - after all we need food as a fuel to hop between concerts . I took a break from work to hear in morning to hear Abilash the 4th gen Semmangudi disciple and then in evening 2 to hear a 3rd generation Semmangudi disciple Abishek, both of them sang the same ragam Shankarabharanam as main and both of them also stared with hayagreevar slokham

My Back of the envelope calculation to look at concurrency is as follows . You can take 5 prime sabhas in mylapore- alwarpet area and may be 4 in T Nagar as a key sabha . But we lost 2 big wickets in T Nagar , one is bit long back Chennai Cultural academy and the very recent Mudhra . Mudhra not conducting is indeed a big loss for me for sure and for many, hope they bounce back from next year in conducting live concerts

Post hearing Abilash in academy , i initially wanted to go and hear Trichy Sankaran in NGS , he played for KBMK and also wanted to settle with a combo of VijaySiva in NGS , for both due to work could not leave on time . THhen i decided to hear may be at 06:10 pm and head to Trichur Brothers at RR Sabha . No confidence that i will make it then opened the paper to see two slots either vanimahal (K Gayatri) or Bharat Kalachar (Abhishek). Abhishek was just a nee nama roopamulaku distance and hooray i was there on time to hear Abhishek in a ticketed concert .

Exercise your choice with plenty of concerts in December season is my mantra and Bharath kalachar is indeed a great sabha that too they not having AC is a double joy .Abhishek surely draws crowd and there was indeed good paid audience though not as high as previous years . I did not see that much NRI's are they all worried that Trump would not let them in to US . NRI's are surely playing bit of spoilsport for margazhi 2024.

Abhishek -Akkarai are a great recurrent combo . Delhi Sairam pairing along with GuruPrasanna was a rare combo for me . The start was the same hayagreevar slokham , both abhishek and abilash took up the same start . Abhishek gently slided with Kalyani , bit of sound adjustment went with the whole varnam , hey i am not complaining as it is just Kalyani

Hamsadhwani vArana mukha va was a lovely start , may be a bit more swaras would have made me happier . The 3rd was a bit of bonker , i knew it was somewhat close to saramathi or Natabhairavi , but just googled to find out suddadesi. I am sure i have heard before but forgot the suddadesi , I am assuming it is one eka krithi of Sadguru and abhishek sang well

Abhishek brings a vortex of energy atleast for one or two songs where you get sucked with such intensity. I would humbly say he possibly forgets or experiments so much on the structure of lakshanam with so much of lakshyam . IT is not a shuffle where you lose the status of Carnatic connectedness like say TM krishna with his alapana in one raga , krithi in another raga . Abhishek brings a connectness that brings extreme mastery of raga bhavam an Carnatic intensity. Alapana though short for 9 mins had so much of nadaswara pidi , his voice was bit like TNR there . So much of brigas just poured . He then sang some lines like viruththam like sindikkiren nindru , i dont know if they are part of the krithi phrases but it was so good. Then alapana return in violin . in the viruththam he suddenly ended with a key phrase muttukumarayannE .

Expectedly the semmangudi popularized muttukumarayanne came in after around of alalapan by violinist . What a rendition , i am forgetting now if semmangudi sang a neraval , but abhishek neraval is fresh in ideas his dulcet voice was giving so many angles of shankarabharanam. Swaras were long in minutes, he did very well though at times it was bit away from microphone. For this melakartha #29 the concert was worth it

The next krithi was so much mangled i did not get that much intensity .Abhishek takes some randomly some line splits too often and atleast to me he lost me in the vanamali jeeyar jonpuri. Poorvikalyani alapana was so cute , i thought wow abhishek go for RTP but he went to one javali which was only partly appealing to me.

A long darbari kAnada Alapana was superb i was whispering will abhishek not pass the taanam to akkarai . But unfortunately he sang only few lines of the krithi as viruththam like and moved to chandrachooda and his rendition was lovely. The last Bhadrachalam ramadas shree Raghu nandana was a lovely rendition , i think this was popularized by DR Balamuralikrishna

Violin support was responsive and akkarai matched well with intensity of Abhishek. Delhi Sairam could have stroked less at quite a few points i felt both mrudangam and kanjira were accompanied by abhishek. Tani from both was fireworks , Guruprasanna being a bangalore based artist i think i have not heard him even twice or may be is this my first one , he matched so well with the flurry of strokes for the main tani. Their tani was well received by audience.

As written in few reviews in the past , Abhishek purposely goes away from microphone , he does that where he wants to give the audience the waxing and waning experience . Then after a delay when he sings more to microphone his voice appears very good . I wish he drops that idea for ever and always sings to the microphone.

There was also a few minute pledge where a sentence was read by Guru Prasanna where the line was we take a pledge that Carnatic music has bhakthi and dharmic principles . Also the MC and chief patron Ygee mahendra asked us to do a few minutes homage to Tabla legend Late Zakir Hussain.

Overall an excellent concert for 2 hours and 40 mins
