On a working day rushing towards the metro minefield mylapore and coming to BVB is definitely difficult . Had to choose either NGS -KFA or BVB, choosed the later . The main reason is the combination of Patri-S Varadarajan was there. OFcourse Palakkad Ramprasad along with KVG are also great. When the curtain opened instead of varadu i spotted HN Bhaskar, certainly top 5 violin accompanist of this era
Ramprasad takes few approaches like Abhishek , having a tambura along with shruthi petti too. I am assuming that shruthi petti is adding value even to the audience or is that only to the ears of Vocalist . Ramprasad is sincere sampradaya musician but at times i feel he needlessly boxes with excess padhatti where the on spot creative pattens in swaras is not coming that well , atleast i feel his potential stays inside and does not come out. Hopefully he cuts consciously bit more
THe start i think was a short viruththam in Kharaharapriya. The lovely ganapathiyE in Kharaharapriya followed as a grand start. I am assuming he took this number as the start was around 07 05 pm due to delay of one violinist . IS that because SV had to swap and HNB had to come last minute or was HMB also caught in mylapore metro nightmare. All said i lost atleast 10 to 15 mins of music
Kharaharapriya was measured and the neraval was nice , Patri was a sriharikota rocket taking off so well. Ramprasad has a bit of inherent weakness to slant many swara patterns and even at times towards Hindustani, but a deep mascular voice is his asset. Lalita appeared as a bit of Aloo masala and did not come as Urulakazhangu podimas . The rendition was neat and the pristine hiranmayeem came up well. The short vijayashri is new to me , appears some one tuned the PD krithi and was a good filler , i missed swaras or was that sung dont know
By the way i wrote in paper and lost the song list . I always take a notebook but i did not for this concert as i thought i would not go to concert . I am assuming i did not miss any song in the list
Convention of big six as main getting replaced with say a mohanam, madhyamavati or Arabi is always welcome . But i missed certain more aesthetics in arabi . Krithi was new to me and he sang well with a nice round of neraval . I wish swaras were bit more explosive but that was left to patri and KVG.
A young college going kid was seated and he asked me if narayanathe namo namo that he sang as dhanyasi , i said it was punnagavarali . I am pretty sure it was punnagavarali (hope it was not some madhyamashruthi bouncer).He sang that well and the emote was well received by me. Ariyakudi ends with shree ramachandranukku jayamangalam , ariyakudi stock mrudangist Palakkad mani iyer must have played many and PMI grand son gave a good finish with a short crisp finish.
If there is 2 things Ramprasad can work is try not adding conscious age to his music , as such he can throw bit more caution out of the wind and second is perhaps little excess hindustanized slant at times for Carnatic concert
HN Bhaskar played very well and being a bit reduced concert he had to restrain for most part. What can one say about patri , every one keeps patri all the way from upcoming youngster to super established vidwan/vidushi and Ramprasad keeping him did a lot of magic .Patri variation within a short spell of say a Pallavi itself boosts the concert . KVG played exceptionally well in tani and both of them created a flurry of patterns that was intensely Carnatic fireworks .
Overall a very good to excellent concert for 2 hours and 5 mins.
