Navarathri is a good harvest for most of the sabhas in chennai . Concurrently at the same time in evening ,there is atleast 3 to 4 sabhas/hall to choose from. Suryaprakash had few days back in mylapore and then in the second zone of intense cm that is T Nagar Vani mahal , he had another concert.
The start was fantastic with a bit rare sowrashtram . This sriganapatthini krithi of T is very good , it is almost near submain like krithi status .Suryaprakash and percussion team had a great kalaikattufying start. Short standalone filler of Kaanada swati krithi mamava sadha was well done with nice intense and distinct kaanada that mmi school excels is a great filler , but my mind went to some ma da da ni pa pa swaras , but i did not get it to that extent it was a brief not so great feeling.
Kalyani submain was a typecast of his two not that known gurus who all are disciples of SSI. MA Venugopal and his athimber tirukodikaval rajamani brought in the SSI essence . THis needhu pankajamula krithi was well done , the kalayani alapana had few pockets of interesting sangathis especially in neraval Om jagath janani the carnatic intensity was very high.He took a TRS Like approach almost singing the swaras in one go.
POst Kalyani everything came in zone of extreme excellence , few were outstanding. Open throated lalitha with slokham was very meditative , hiranmayeem lakshmem was sung with pleading rasa, certainly vocalist did very well. THe keeravani devi neeye was exceptionally good , konjam touches like Tanjore S kalyanaraman was indeed there to me.

The main going to jujavanthi was unexpected, OPen throated vocal honesty giving lot of pointed sangathis in akhilandeshwari did showcase the percussionist team who aligned so well. Akhilandeshwari as a main , i have once got a recording from tiruvanaikaval , trichy concert thru a mobile and then once palakkad ramprasad sang so well in velachery. Wow wow akhilandeshwari come out and promote yourself as main.Once the same vidwan sang a RTP in jujavanthi as a pallavi in vanimahal, this time it was akhilandeshwari as main. Beautiful rendition with lot of meend phases in the jujavanthi was very engaging to me.
The kapi narayani flag ship krithi was a beautiful filler with an extreme high quota of manodharmam during swaras, again a TRS Like approach of MMI ideas almost the swaras was one go.In the virutththam tukkadas for the second half Suryaprakash was a madurai somu to me . He suddenly sang few popular phrases connecting place and main deity(like kanchiyil kamakshi, nellaiyil kanthimathi). Suddenly a phrase of T Nagaril Muppathamma(that was a madurai somu typecast) and ending with mayilaiyile karpagame was impressive
The violinst Dr Narmada did caught up with law of average for sure. HEr tonal clarity was not that great . The alapana returns could hae been bit more classical with more clearer violin azhuttam . BUt i did not get a steady good tone of the divine violin. AC was also cold possibly did the string succumb to AC , i dont know .
Percussion play of melakavari balaji was superb ,sarvalghu in great action. Ghatam Rajaraman matched very well especially in the first half . Their tani was crisp and handed over the vocal baton quickly.That perhaps gave me a long viruththam like a somu/santhanam/kvn like and i enjoyed it thoroughly.
Vanimahal team (i do know few office bearers will read this review), please give 15 mins extra which was the norm few years back, exact closure of concert in 2 hours for the series does not give more quota of carnatic muse . I would be more ecstatic if you end at 9 pM instead of 8 45 PM. I appreciate their professionalism to start at 06 30 PM on time.
Overall an excellent concert for 2 hours
