It was a stellar concert from Suryaprakash in the morning slot in Academy. Actually he deserves an evening slot. But for reasons best known to the Academy, they have put him in the morning slot. Suryaprakash started the concert with a rare varnam of Tiger Varadachariar. The next song Lambodaraya Namaste is also a not frequently heard piece. I have heard this from Rajkumar Bharathy many years back in Bangalore. The song selection was very good today. Choosing many songs outside the MMI-TVS zone. Kamakshi Katakshi is a good choice which he embellished with neraval in the lines Aadaaram nee enakku Vedapureeswariye and suffficient doses of swaras.
Ragam Devagandhari was also presented in a leisurely tempo and the song made famous by Musiri was given full justice.
The main ragam Bhairavi and also Mohanam for the RTP were given detailed presentation unfolding the characteristic beauty of the ragams in a disciplined manner with the choicest brighas and gamakams and akara sangatis. His voice felicity was very much evident while negotiating tara stayi sancharams. In the Bhairavi alapana he showed glimpses of many famous kritis in the ragam. The sangatis in Mandra sthayi added variety to the presentation. Janani Mamava – Navarathri kriti of Swati Tirunal was presented in the right kalapramanam with the authentic sangatis in tact. Neraval on the lines Anupamita kamala vase and the kalpana swarams added weight to the entire concert.
Without wasting time on the fillers, he launched the ragam Mohanam straight after the tani avartanam. Here also, he elaborated the ragam showing the subtle nuances and ravai jathi sangatis. Tanam was measured. The Complex pallavi was handled with aplomb. Elaborate neraval, trikalam were executed with razor sharp precision. Ragamalika swaras were in Behag, Hindolam and Dwijavanti.
The planning was perfect as he devoted 35 minutes for the RTP without hurrying up.
The pakkavadyams- they gave good support. Could have been better.
Excellent concert of Suryaprakash.

Re: SURYAPRAKASH IN MUSIC ACADEMY- 17/12/19
R Suryaprakash is a great carnatic Musician not properly recognised as usual by Rasikas community who throng only for a couple of lucky musicians.Though he was first in the evening slot a couple of years ago surya Prakash is now in the morning slot.Evening slot is perhaps dependent on a minimum crowd. But in case of R Suryaprakash there was considerable crowd.
Only Music Academy can clear the criteria adopted for morning and Evening slots.
Rasikas who like R Surya Prakash will be delighted he is performing in Prime morning slot of 2 and half hours. The morning prime slots are all by eminent musicians.
R SuryaPrakash offers chaste and rare Krithis and has wide selection to offer.
I wish great success to R suryaprakash in promoting Carnatic Music.

I have always assumed....
That the 9am slot is for eminent musicians and the ticketed concerts are for popular musicians (who might be eminent too of course). Generally. Not a hard line, so we can't be sure.

Nick,
I feel too that trying to fit in all their choices resulted in this. It's a prestigious slot, though--in spite of the fact that Suryaprakash is quite young among the musicians who sing at that hour. Added to the Academy's scheduling headache is the amount of young talents that have surfaced in the recent years.
The atmosphere at a morning concert is something I like. We come out with a sense of satisfaction, having heard some worthwhile music. The audience too seem as if they have come to listen to serious music.
Suryaprakash no wonder did a great job. Of course, we would like to see him featured in the evening. I also have to add that if Trisur Bros were given an evening slot, why not Suryaprakash? He is a more seasoned and serious vidvAn. I don't mean to judge the singing of the brothers at all. But surely, Suryaprakash deserves the slot. No need to compare, I realize. All that I say has nothing to do with my knowing him for so long and for his singing my songs in one of my CDs, please!

We play phrases 3 times in kaRNAtaka sampradaya. Your repeat postings probably reflect that
By the way - a good concert of Suryaprakash from 2014: http://www.sangeethamshare.org/tvg/SEAS ... yaprakash/
In the pallavi execution, He brings out the best in Manoj Siva.

Thank you shankarank, for your graceful responseto my being annoyingly repetitive. Well, in real life too, I'm at a stage when repetition of mundane utterances are not uncommon

No worries. Remember the saying also: third time is a charm!

That's a long korvai to repeat three times, arasi!
I am very happy to see play in the daytime slots, especially the 9am, which, I think, is the full-length one, rather than the evening, for obvious reasons. Which are entirely selfish, and probably obvious!
(I spent as much to see Sumithra as I would have done in London)

I believe it is recognition of an artist's scholarship to be selected for the 9 am slot at academy.
