PR has a voice like Milk and Honey but it is a weighty Classical voice-none of the floating in the ether business :) Having said that, the voice was the only little blip in the evening - well in hand , but she was nursing some form of throat irritation.

If you go past that, it was a pristine Carnatic concert. It was professionally and deftly led through all the aspects by the whole team. I do like the math when it is aesthetically presented in Music. PR is not a math veteran. But she does have a story to tell in each little or big KS she presents. This was evident starting from the Begada to the RTP. It goes to show that there are many ways to skin the cat :)

Most people milk Lalitha for its emotional appeal but PR milked it for its technicality. And that was refreshing. It was well replied by Shri Murthi as well. Again, the Syama Shastri kriti is laden with emotion and pathos. That was all laid out well to enjoy. The Neraval @ 'Bhaktha Kalpalathika Nannu Brovu' and 'Athi Vegame' with the madhyama kala and Mel kala swaras were really the hallmark of a thinking musician.

She sang the Kalgada differently and just to add, Vallabha in Begada was also a tad slower than usual.

The RTP line was composed by Shri Murthy. Clever!! He left alone the Arabhi of Swathi Thirunal and Mohanam of MD and chose Bilahari for its lyrical match still keeping with the masculinity of the Vishnu Avatar he was depicting. Nicely handled by everyone with Ragamalika swaras in Bhoopalam, and Behag. The Big Bs!!

By this time, I thought it was too late for that rare Thyagaraja kriti from the Mother Ship. Yes, there was Pratapavarali but I guess I've heard it a few times plus I have hashed it a few times myself. So, I thought Not today. Well !!

Anyway, it was great to hear Navaneethachora in Navroz. If I remember right she sang it in Hamilton, NZ in 2015. Lord Balaji in Hamilton was resting after his Abhishekam earlier in the day. So, he must have been well-lilted by that melody of the Master.
Wrapped up with a Thillana which I can't say (or remember) I've heard before

She will be singing in Mellbourne today and Sydney next week. Treat in store, Oz

MV,
I did not get that comment on Mother Ship. Is that secret phrase that you can understand only when you travel to NZ.How long was the concert?. Few years back I heard a KAnadA thilllana of Pantula @Arkays that had phrases like karunakara...., I put it as thillana with Poochi Iyengar as author??, not very sure of the vaggeyakkara. You can ask pantula and let us know the KAnadA thillana composer . Thank you for your review.

MV,
My, my! Sweet yellow kiwis all the way for me--both your review and the artiste I love to hear!
In good voice or not, her gAmbhIryam and charm win me over! That one concert I heard this season (voice not at par) moved me so much. Dignity, diction, keen sense of the words and music...
