New Comers - and their requests
Of Late I have been getting numerous mails for expired rapidshare Links.
Some of them Bulk Requests !!
With a membership that is growng by the day and the hour , this is a demand that has to be nicely addressed.
Remember , just a few months ago we were driving home the point that we should not be using this forum just for sake of transfer of music from one hand to another , or to simply build on our personal stockpiles.
The increased participation and requests for the OLd links is surely a welcome sign.
Is there a way we can address this issue collectively :
Say by
1.Identifying the volunteers who could respond fairly fast .Such members could come out with their email IDS in a thread dedicated to to such reruns.
2.From my end , I regret that in many cases I do not retain the track , in the mode they are applied here.Quite Often I try to pick out the most memorable rendering -as a subject progresses- prise it out of the concert tracks , sometimes improve the quality (i had to do it for gs manis saree evaramma yesterday ) , and then upload.
Hence retracing my steps is a bit out of my reach now.
3.I wonder if we should have a volunteer , on behalf of the forum , to keep storing the tracks -threadwise- and build a cd(or dvd) progressively.
Coming to think of it a CD containing all the wodeyars krithis with all those commentaries , links etc by our scholar members would now be such a great treasure.Change "Wodeyars krithis " to Ragamalika" and the result would be the same.
4.A volunteer to update the Audio Folder by posting the new links there.
I look forward to more suggestions.

Great point Coolji.
As valuable as the tracks themselves are, the discussions are far more valuable. I joined at the end of the "Wodeyar" discussions. Boy - did i learn a lot from that. srkris - is there a facility to archive all of these discussions? I would hate to think that all this wonderful information will disappear in a few months like a puff of smoke. I hope there is way to capture these discussions and allow folks to download them. Personally i would like to re-read some of these posts - maybe in a few months, perhaps even a few years down the line.
I am willing to volunteer to do some of the work.

Count me among the volunteers. Here's a link to a file that contains sangeetham.com's discussions. It would be nice to archive this forum's discussions like that too.
http://rapidshare.de/files/13997178/sangeetham.chm.html
The file format works only on windows though.

I am making a complete backup of the forum's database once every few days, so.... no it wont all vanish if I can help it.
But as stakeholders, all of us have a right to ensure that we dont lose any part of these discussions, so I'll soon find a way of distributing copies to all those interested.
With regard to the points raised by coolkarni (MP3 tracks), I dont have an answer yet... we can explore all options.

That's great news and very heartening to hear. Thank you very much for taking care of it. I am sure my gratitude will be echoed by everyone who visits this forum.
I don't know how the forum's upkeep is funded (perhaps by your vast genorisity?). Might I suggest supplementing that through a "fee" for a copy of the transcript. In fact, if we divvy up the work of organizing some of the discussions into "chapters" i.e. one of us takes the wodeyar thread and edits it/organizes it - then we can distribute it for a nominal fee that would help the sustenance of this wonderful forum. Thoughts?

Well, many persons have started asking me by email - about the cost of running the forum website.
I am therefore making the secret known to everyone here, so everyone can read here itself instead of me telling it again and again to everyone by email.
The cost has fixed and variable portions. The fixed portion is about Rs 1500 (domain name and hosting space) per year. The variable portion varies according to usage (more participation means more bandwidth used and consequently higher costs), and this could be a few hundred rupees to a few thousands each year (depending on the bandwidth accessed by all users).
Of course a good portion of it goes out of my personal funds, but the google ads which appear at the bottom of the forum generates a small revenue when they are clicked. That also helps me meet the cost of running the website. The most significant reimbursement, of course, is the wealth of musical knowledge that is accumulating, thanks to selfless donors who participate here.
Hope those :arrowu: details settle everyone's curiosity.

Dear all,
In fact, why dont we suggest to Srkris or to Coolkarni to open a bank account and the number sent to all of us so that we make it a point to transfer a pre-decided amount into the account at regular intervals - this will cater to all the costs of running such a website -
Any suggestions to the :arrowu:

Param and others,
Rather than worry about this site's costs, we should consider the possibility of a website for storing the music uploaded.
I guess coolkarni will be the right person to be endowed with a permanent website for having all "non-copyrighted" recordings uploaded here.
As we all know, rapidshare uploads are lost after about a month or two. We should really be thinking about our own website for those recordings instead of relying on websites like rapidshare.
I feel sad that all his uploads are lost and he is being loaded with further requests to upload the same recordings time and again... if we can sort out this issue, that will be great.

Iam going to ask you a rather daft question. Can we not all chip-in and start a website similar to that of Rasikapriya.net? That way it will be lighter on you and people who u/l stuff. Further more, all of us can have a permanent way of storing the stuff
apologies if I said something I am not supposed to..
Cheers

Hello
Count me in it too. we have to have a permanent place for these recordings. It is a shame that we cannot download some rare recording because it's timed out. The whole purpose of sharing then will not be limited to a time period.
Coolkarni's efforts should not go waste and should be preserved.
Count me in again!

Option 1
1. Start a website that has bandwidth to support uploads and ensure that uploads remain for a long time (along with the posts)
Pros:
Among others
a. All uploaded music stays forever
Cons:
a. How to support the website costs? Donations? Membership? The notion of membership - as alluring as it is, turns off new comers very quickly - it is my opinion that this should be forum where all are welcome. Only requirement is knowledge of CM or quest for knowledge of CM. So maybe a website that is funded by voluntary donations. Of course the problem is - what if we run out of money?
Option 2
Relatively cheaper option - but complicated to manage. Let's chip in for say 5 or 10 rapidshare premier accounts - Files uploaded to premier accounts don't get deleted - they remain until the membership expires. Frequent uploaders like Coolji etc. will get these premier accounts. For all the uploads from other people, we will have to download the files and reupload them into the premier account
Option 3
Maybe the forum can write to rapidshare - pay them a yearly fee for a different sort of account where any of us can upload the files - they remain there forever - perhaps even arranged by artists/concerts
These are just some thought starters - hopefully we can come up with a good longer-term solution.

I also find it curious to note that many members do not give details of their locations .At least the ones who request re-uploads.There are simpler solutions if only locations are known.
BTW are we likely to get to the point of having
"Carnatic Music Forum -city wise Chapters "
It would be wonderful to keep meeting say once in 6 weeks and spend a lazy sunday afternoon talking ,sharing and maybe listening to an artist
and then share the experience in this forum.
Ofcourse i am speaking for chennai and bangalore (where I can dash to at a moments notice ) .
I know that Bombay can boast of atleast 6 members , London 3 ..

new_cmfan, thanks for the efforts. I put it to good use. rapidshare randomly gave me a 12 hour promotional premium account to experience the joy the premium account is. I loaded up all the links from your spreadsheet I did not have to the rapidshare download tool 'rapidget' and it got all the 200+ files for me.(around 3Gig). It was a promotional account for 12 hours with a ceiling of 3 Gig. 'rapidget' took care of downloading that much in 4 hours. All I had to do was to copy from your spreadsheet, paste it to rapidget, delete the ones I already have and click start. That is it. It was a very painfree experience. Thanks for your efforts in organizing those links for us.Link for active rapidshare links (uploaded Jan and Feb).

Just a funny thing to share...One of the rapid share links was named 'MM.zip'. Thinking it is MM Iyer, I downloaded that. I unzipped it and it contained an executable. I have come across archives packaged as .exe and so I thought that is what it is. So I double clicked that... it is the Music Match executable

Shishyapriya
Here is something we discusssed and agreed upon before.
We have never approached uploads and downloads here as a means of music exchange. But something that is necessary to illustrate a point that is being discussed , or even bring a well known fact into more sharp focus.
Now the only issue that needs to be addressed is the manner in which the needs of new entrants like you( who read the threads and feel like having missed out , by not registering earlier.)
Surely there is a way , and that is the way you have adopted.
By participating in dicsussions and letting us know your thoughts.
Uploaders like me will always be in constant touch here and will do the necessary re-uploading, but the point to be remembered is that it will be gradual .
I woud suggest that these requests are for individual tracks, as and when something interests you .
The trick of making us upload is simple feedback -or atleast an acknowledgement mixed with your reactions.
Dedicated upload sites etc , We have made up our mind against that.
Right now you can look forward to some action again on Kalyanraman..
