bhavAni (Not Dikshitar's)

Post by SrinathK »

This raga is probably the trickiest in CM to master, both vocally and on the instrument. Because

Aro : S R1 G2 M2 D1 N2 S
Avaro : S N2 D1 M2 G2 R1 S

This is a panchama varja raga (devoid of P) and every note is flat. There are no natural notes. One can get confused over which note one is singing rather easily.

To my knowledge, I know of one composition in this raga. unnai yanDri uTTRa tunai by MM Dandapani Desigar. I also remember Unnikrishnan singing this live a very long time ago at NGS.

It was an MLV Special and so here it is : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAK3wDQqnvs - from Geethanjali - Indian Classical Music's Channel

There is also a Hindustani raga by this name that is very different.

In Muthuswami Dikshitar's school, bhavAni is the asampUrna mEla name of bhavapriya. Hence I had to distinguish.
