In the last line, does "guru guha smarana" really mean the one who thinks of Shanmuka or can it be interpreted as the one who will protect Dikshitar or the one who Dikshitar thinks of? Can someone please explain the connection to Shanmukha as I am unaware of it. Thanks!

Sri Muttusvāmi Dīkshitar considered shaNmukha as his guru and chose that as his ankita/mudra.
smaraNa is think/meditate etc. there's nothing related to protection here.
guru guha smaraNa = one who meditates upon/thinks of my guru, shaNmukha.

Others can clarify better
