THE basant bahar

Post by ganesh_mourthy »

I have added the pronoun to it because , it is extraordinary , at the same time complex. Initially I had the opinion that it is hamsanandi. but it is not. Is it possible to unravel it?

It's 2 ragas in one. Has two distinct and exclusive arahonams : S G3 M2 D1 N3 S and S M1 P G2 M N2 D2 N3 S while the avaro is the same as Panthuvarali - S N3 D1 P M2 G3 R1 S. The 2nd part also allows a G2 M1 R2 phrase similar to Kaanada.

Maharajapuram Santhanam's thillana in Basant Bahar is a wonderful composition to listen to.

thanks you SriKanth. I thought it was simply Basanth and Bahar in Aro and Avaro , but it was not. I am trying to delineate it. Does not fall easily into any framework.

varsha that is indeed a beautiful piece. There is a lot of debate in Hindustani circle on how Basanth Bahaar shoudl be sung. It has almost all the 12 notes. :)

Hope this helps included are some very precious recordings.

If basant bahar still poses a problem , remember Pablo Casals words
The art of interpretation is not to play what is written :D

There's only one composition out there in this rAga with 2 distinct arohanam sequences to my knowledge :

Maharajapuram Santhanam's tillAnA : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEE-W0HUWwg
