There was just one post that too some ten years back. Ghanam Krishna Iyer was a contemporary of Thyagaraja. He is famous for padams in Tamil. We will now see a very brief biograohy and a few of his famous kruthis.

Krisna Iyer was a discile of Pachimiryam along with Shyama Sastry.

Krishna Iyer was the fifth son of Ramaswamy Iyer of Thirukkunram in the Udayarpalayam taluk of Tiruchirapalli district. Ramaswami Iyer was also a composer and musician at Thanjavur palace. He learned the intricacies of ‘ghanam’ from Bobbili Kesavayya and became proficient. ‘Ghanam’ is a unique style of singing and believed to have a dominant stance. Hence the title Ghanam got added to his name.

Ghanam Krishna Iyer was patronized by the rulers and zamindaars, Kabisthalam Ramachandra Moopanar, Kanji Kalyana Rangappa Udaiyar of Udaiyarapalyam, and Tiruvidai marudoor Amara Simha. He composed almost 80 padams.

Some of his famous and popular compositions are
“Kondai Kulungave” in Kambhoji, “Parengum paartalum” in Kalyani, “Parimala natha” in Durbar, “
Summa Summa varuguma” in Athana, “Thillaiappa unadu” in Kamavardhani and “
Jaggajanani sukhapani” in Ratipatipriya.


When Ghanam Krishna Iyer, composer and court musician of the Udayarpalayam palace, visited Tyagaraja in Tiruvaiyaru, the latter’s disciples Kamasavalli Nanu Iyer and Thillaisthanam (Thiruneithanam) Rama Iyengar sang ‘Epapamu’,a keethanai in Atana.

Tyagaraja also requested Krishna Iyer to sing something. “Krishna Iyer rendered an alapana of Atana before singing the pallavi ‘Epapamu’. He embellished it with imaginative swaras and infused it with unique ideas. A pleased Tyagaraja asked Krishna Iyer to render his own song in Atana. Immediately, he composed the song ‘Summa summa varumo sugam’,” writes Tamil scholar U.V. Swamintha Iyer in his monograph on Krishna Iyer, recalling the conversation between the two great musicians.
