OOTTUKKADU VENKATA KAVI’S RAMAYANA
A special MASTER-CLASS by
Sangeet Samrat CHITRAVINA N RAVIKIRAN
The brilliant Shree rama jayame jayam by Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi is an abridged Ramayana Ragamalika, set in 5 ragas –Nattai, Varali, Arabhi, Gowla and Manirangu (in that order).
This piece is one of the few that feature that mudra, ‘Venkata Kavi’ while a majority of his compositions have a mudra referencing Krishna’s Kalinga nartana.
This is distinctive from his full-fledged opera on Ramayana which has scores of individual compositions and is as ideal for group renditions (goshti ganams) as his Saptaratna kritis.
