...and I am not talking about those standard run-of-the-mill 'vote of thanks' speeches! :-)

Do fellow-rasikas have audio clips from concerts of yesteryears, where a famous personality (fellow musician, organizer, etc.) has made a speech - or even the artiste him/herself has spent some time talking. To me these are priceless gems and provide a glimpse into that golden era.

I have an Ariyakudi 75th b'day concert (this is a gem!) from 1963 that includes speeches by couple of famous people of the time. Also an MDR concert where he talks at length. These are in tape format, will convert and post here soon.

jayaramji,

Is that concert of ARI the one at Vani Mahal and Chittoori Nagayyah speaks in tamizh about "IyengArvAL" elaborately and wishes him?

I love that concert, its a gem. (vanajAkshi, sAdincanE, rAmanAtam, bhakthi bhIkSa, kaddanuvAriki, mA jAnaki, ninnu vina, sAvEri rtp, and others).

BMK, KJY, TKG and Sowmya are all known talk (sometimes extensively) in their concerts. The latter two are always crisp informative while the former two make me feel like "If they sing it would be better". No offense to any of these great artistes though.

Chembai's impromptu speech at young Parveen's concert at the Academy is precious! Cool posted it a while ago. Goes well with the concurrent thread on marriage songs! Wish Chembai had SUNG one that day!

ksrimech, yes that's the one I'm talking about. Btw, the single tape I have doesn't include all the pieces from your list. If you have the speech in digital format pls do upload.

Isn't Nagaiah the one who acted as Tyagaraja in 'Tyagayya' (also produced the movie?). (an aside: what a great movie! - is it available anywhere?) And the other person who gives a speech is SYK if I remember correctly.

To get this started, here's a speech by PMI (Palghat Mani Iyer) on layam. Great stuff.

Look forward to the gems from Cool-garu's collection.

I start with this brilliant moment from a 1956 Rama Navami Concert of a Bade Ghulam Ali Khan (The Combination of Bade and Rama Navami itself is fascinating- )
There is only a short announcement by the Organiser here , but this clip captures Bade's retuning of Swara Mandal from Yaman to Hamsadhwani- magnificent moments , with the Harmonium prompting him , too.
And at exactly 3.11 when he first strikes his swara mandal for Hamsadhwani, the result is breathtaking.
A soul stirring rendering , brushing past Raga Shankara, time and again.

Here is Mehdi Hasan in a very famous track.Talks about the flippant nature of the scale in Miya Malhar and how these are beyond the scope of a Harmonium, His Nostalgic memories of great masters and yet his belief that a Raga is timeless-Everytime it is born....

More later.

i used to enjoy the written speech of the old gentleman in hamsadwani. it is full of wit and humour. (he does not mind stretching it a bit to the annoyance of the performing artist!)

chalanata,
Did you enjoy the gentleman's written speech or the annoyance of the performing artist, or both?
JUST kidding :)
Personally, I feel sorry for the performers who for the hundredth time have to listen through the routine, long winding introduction, sometimes sprinkled with incorrect information too. I consider it an occupational hazard. You may negotiate rates, travel without any delays, have a hall full of audience, but lo and behold, there goes the speech, no, speeches and garlanding, honoring, and does the concert start promptly after that? No, the fiddler fiddles with the fiddle, the mrudangist starts tuning his drum and...

That's really Cool! Chembai in fine form indeed. Btw, which year is this from? Chembai mentions he's 80 in the clip.

A question here: Should the word be vAggEyakAriNi? vAggEyakArikA?

This one doesn't come under the same category of speeches by jambavans, but it's extra special because of the chief guest present in the audience!

ramakriya,
I have always considered myself a peasant woman, in spite of my name. So, it suits me to be called vAggEaykAri (a tamizhized word as in pazhakkAri, vElaikkAri?).

Jayaram,
A peasant doesn't give darshans! I would be very happy to meet my fellow forumites--but our stay this time is very short. Since one of my children lives there in the UK at present, we could meet in the near future, no doubt :)

Mehdi Hasan introduces all his accompanying artists here.At the end , more as an afterthought, He introduces his son -
" I have decided to bring him on stage.Just as an old Cat shows its kitten , all the nooks and corners of the House , in which it lives.."
Such a nice way of putting it.

In a padmasree felicitation concert of MDR in Bombay, there is a very nice speech given by the organizer followed by Palghat Mani Iyer and then MDR himself. The section by PMI is really interesting. The concert that follows is wonderul concert too accompanied by LGJ, UKS and V Nagarajan.

Does anyone here have the speeches from this Padmasri concert? I've heard it's really great.

Here is another spot where Bade Ghulam Ali Khan opens up.

This time he is elaborating on that exact difference, which separates a Purely classical rendering of a raga and a Lighter version as seen in thumris.
"Are these big secrets ?"
he queries
"Notice the way we glide from one Sur to another"
and demonstrates it.
"Oh ! The taunts I have recieved that I am a thumri Singer ...
I am not used to speaking for myself , but let my Music do the talking..."

All this within the first few minutes of a Concert opening with Raag Darbari..

THE KING OF RAGAS .
THE RAGA OF THE KINGS .

In the Hands of one of those last Monarchs.

jayaramji, you are absolutely right. He is a pure gem or a cOkka tangam (24 Carat Gold), how ever you want to define his song. Thank you for the correction.

Everytime I hear ARI sing, I feel. "en irAmAnusanai kETTa en kAdugaL, maRRonRiNai kElAvE". But still I end up hearing MS, DKJ, MDR, KVN, Ravikiran, and others.

Here is the clip of the speeches made by various persons including PMI and MDR at Bharatiya Society, Bombay in 1974 preceding the MDR concert. Other than MDR speaking in English, rest of the speeches are in tamil.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/rhdush

MDR sings a fabulous begada in nadopasana, sri in namakusumamulace and mukhari in elavataramu in this concert

Here is an occasion where Fateh Ali starts one of his concerts in Kabul. He talks of the seemingly endless nature of the Gift ,that music is.
How one can never stop and proclaim that he has learnt everything.Looking around perhaps , He invites the audience to absorb the mood of the evening and starts a majestic Megh. After making an offer to sing as much as the audience wants-whatever they want.

A beautiful moment.
