Friends
As you may know our Dr. Shrikaanth Murthy (DRS) has been awarded the 'Rasikapriya Annual Award for 2006' from sangitapriya by the universal choice and support from the international Rasika community.
The award ceremony will take place at Maidstone, kent UK on March 10th 3:30 PM to 7:00PM.
DRS has agreed to perform a concert on that occasion which we hope will be recorded and videoed and made available to our Rasika community.
If you wish to participate/contribute or wish to help with arrangements or need more information kindly get in touch with me by responding to:
cmlover100@yahoo.ca
You may also send your greetings and congratulatory messages to me which I will consolidate and transmit to him on that occasion.
I personally feel that this is a great honour for us all at this Forum as much as DRS is continuing to render great service to CM through these portals.

I've got a 50% chance that I will make it. I have been in touch with the Dr in the last couple of days. Work permitting hopefully. It would be great to see people from the forums and to congratulate DRS on his award!!
Also if people are sure they are going to attend, please post so that we have an idea of who's coming!

Here are the full details and directions for the award ceremony.
The award ceremony followed by the concert by Dr.S. Murthy is on 10th March Saturday, 3:30 PM with accompanying artistes (violin and mridangam) at
St.Andrews Church,
St.Andrews Road, Barming, Maidstone
Follow the map
http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/ ... =182&y=108
The church is right at the corner of St.Andrews road and Tonbridge road. As that end is closed, the approach is from Fountain Lane. That is a small intersection(Town roads) witha traffic light. AT that corner is "The Duke of Edinburgh" pub. While coming from the Maidstone East railway station(By cab), one has to follow the signposts to "Maidstone Hospital", come down Tonbridge road, turn right at traffic lights into Fountain Lane and at the very next Traffic light at the pub (200 Yards or so), turn right into St.Andrews Road and come up to the end (Where it again meets Tonbridge road). Of course any Cab driver will know it so no need to worry at all.
We do hope our Forum members (those who can) will all atttend. If you need assistance pl contact Jayaram 44 779 004 2916 or
sriram 44 1628 768061
We hope the concert audio/video will be available eventually for all of us to enjoy.
Now here is quiz for you all!
Who is the first vaggeyakaaraka to compose CM in the sankEti language?
(of course you all know the answer!). Now who is the first to compose CM in the Malayalam language?

The event was a great success yesterday- thanks to God's grace, the blessings of my guru, my parents, cooperation from Sahana and the untiring efforts of Sriram, Jayaram, and the help from Ahiri and spouse, Kiran surya and of course CML for all his encouragement and behind the screen organising.
My thanks are also due accompanists Jyotsna and Amuthan.; and to all those who attended the event. And to Srini for being present on behalf of all other rasikas.

Dear fellow rasikas,
10th March 2007 was an important day for true rasikas of Carnatic music in the UK. Our very own Dr Shrikaanth K Murthy (DRS) was felicitated and presented the 'Rasikapriya' award in Maidstone, UK. Several rasikas including members of this forum attended the event, which was a great success. Here is a brief report of the afternoon event:
- The evening's proceedings started with an invocation prayer by Ranjani (Ahiri on this forum).
- Next followed an introduction of DRS, and presentation of the Rasikapriya award by Shri Rajagopalan Srinivasan of Sangeethapriya.
- Sriram sang a composition of DRS in Desh, to set the stage for the main kutcheri.
Next followed a scholarly kutcheri by DRS. Here are the details:
====================================
Dr Shrikaanth K. Murthy (vocal)
Dr Jyotsna Srikanth (violin)
Amuthan Chandrakumar (mridangam)
1. sakhi SrIkAntana - varnam - punnAgavarALi - Adi - Shrikaanth K. Murthy
2. tattvamariya taramA - Ritigowla - Adi - Papanasam Sivan
3. O pannaradO kANE - kannaDa - rUpaka - Shrikaanth K. Murthy (brief AlApane and swaras in 2nd kAla)
4. paralOka sAdhaname manasA - pUrvikalyANi - dESAdi - Tyagaraja (AlApane, swaras in 2 kAlas)
5. nA ninna dhyAnadoLiralu - kAnaDa - Mishra chapu - Purandara Dasa
6. SrI vEnkaTa girISam - suraTi - Muttuswami Dikshitar (AlApane, neraval, swaras in 2 kAlas)
7. Tani avartanam
8. innu daya bArade - kalyANa vasanta - khaNDacApu - Purandara Dasa
9. rAmAyaNa mangaLa rAgamAlikA suLAdi - Shrikaanth K. Murthy
(SrIrAga, dhanyAsi, vasanta, asAvEri, mOhana, saurAShTra, suraTi set to the suLAdi sapta tALas)
===================================
- Ranjani presented the vote of thanks, wherein she thanked rasikas from the world over, including members of Sangeethapriya.org and Rasikas.org - special mention was made of Srinivasan of sangeethapriya.org and Ramakrishnan (srkris) of rasikas.org for making it possible for music lovers from around the world over to come together.
===================================
I will leave it to some of the more learned members of this forum who attended the event (Ahiri, Sriram?) to give a more detailed review of the kutcheri. I can say I was mesmerised by the brilliant swara patterns (and swaraksharas) that came our way...
The violinst Jyotsna's husband Srikanth, who is himself a musician of some merit, was sitting next to me, and expressed 'ooh's and 'aah's during various places in the concert and later told me he hadn't attended such a scholarly kutcheri in a long time. That just about sums up the concert, I think.
The musical feast was followed by a culinary feast.
All in all, a memorable day for music rasikas. Thank you, DRS.

I forgot to mention the lovely hospitality offered to us rasikas by DRS and family.
A special thanks goes out to Smt Sahana who weaved her magic with her lovely dishes - and her charming smile which made us all feel welcome.
And special love and kisses to baby Pruthvi who made the evening even more special for us.
What a wonderful family. May God's blessings be with them always.

Jayaram,
Thank you for your report on the event and for all your help. Same to other forumites, friends and family who were lucky enough to be there. Above all, thanks to Rajagoplan Srinivasan who was very much there-and to sangeethapriya for making admirable DRS the very first recipient of the Rasikapriya award...

I feel like shooting myself for being in Boulder and not in UK. Particularly, not getting to listen to the punnAgavarALi varNam. Is it the only varNam in that rAgA? Congratulations to our gurU friend and vidvAn rasikapriya Dr Shrikaanth Murthy gAru. Fantastic selection of songs Murthy gAru.
I'll be grateful to our friends of they can upload the concert with the permission of Dr Shrikaanth Murthy gAru. I'm eagerly waiting for nA ninna dyAna and innudaya bArade, beautiful songs.

Here is the appetizer for you all waiting to hear DRS.
Jayaram has done a great job giving us a peek at the happenings. As we all know DRS is not just a scholar but is highly innovative but within the bounds of tradition and classicism. Hence the starting varNam in punnagavaraLi a raga which has never been heard in that context or even as a starting raga is a rare treat indeed. There is supposed to be a varnam in sanskrit in punnagavarali composed in the 19th century by Irayaman Thampi which however is incomplete with no svarams available. Though I am no expert I can imagine the difficulty in constructing a varnam in a raga which is not defined by its notes! But I can confidently assure you this is the only varNam in punnagavarali in the sankEti language. Though the audio is not too good you can still enjoy the beauty of the raga until we get the lyrics, subtle explanations and the notations from DRS soon.
