Maybe this topic was already taken up. I would like to know the differences between the two. I listened to MSS's Sambo Mahadeva in MIO rendered in Bowli and Sanjay subrahmanyam's sadha chaleswaram in Boopalam. Can anyone please post some downloadable, non-copyrighted songs to help understand the differences between the 2 raagas.

I would like to thank each and everyone of you to have kept this good website. It is extremely informative. Thanks once again.

Refer to http://www.geocities.com/vienna/strasse ... rjanya.htm for a list of ragas. Also check revagupti which is also similar to Bowli.

Actually the only stark difference between bhauLi and bhUpAlam is the use of n1 in the former. If you've heard Smt MSSs' rendition of ShambhO mahAdEva you can discern her emphasis on the note. rEvagupti is derived from the 15th mELa, mAyAmaLavagauLa and employs the antara gAndhAra, g3, as opposed to bhUpALa (derived from hanumatODi, I think) which uses the g2.

One thing I'm not sure however, is the kriti, "sadAcalEShvaram," of dIkshitar. It employs a different gAndhara which gives it a Shubha pantuvarALi-esque flavor.

Posters could correct me on the matter as well.

n1?? bhauLi uses the kAkali niShAda in descent. SR1G3PD1S* |S*N3DPGRS ||
It is derived from MMgauLa.

rEvagupti is closely related to bhauLi. The only difference being the absence of niShAda.

bhUpALa differs from rEvagupti in having the sAdhAraNa gAndhAra. It is now placed under tODi, the 8th mELa. But I would place it under SivapantuvarALi, the 45th mELa going by its bhAva SR1G2PD1S* |S*DPGRS ||

The gAndhAra is sAdhAraNa alright. See my note above. Check this piece by gAyatri posted on sangeethapriya- SubhapantuvarALi written all over.

Interestingly, according to Sangeetha Sampradaya Pradarshini, it is classified as a janya of the 9th mela dhunibhinnaSaDjam

And that is why this rAga is called bhUpAli tODi in hindustAni system, and placed under the tODi thAT (eq. of sivapantuvarALi)

drshrikaanth Sir, I bow to your deep musical insight. My first exposure to the Hyderabad Bros. rendition of sadAcalEShvaram was startling owed to the gAndhAra as I knew very little then. We learn a lot from these boards.

Besides Sanjay, has any other artist rendered sadachaleswaram in Bhoopalam? Has TSK rendered this?

Hyd Brothers have it in one of their commercial releases ( Dikshitar Masterpieces)
Sowmya also has sung in one release. - I forget the album name.

There might be many others.

The Malladi Brothers have rendered sadACalEshwaram very well in a commercial release. IIRC Sri TM Krishna also sang this krithi during one of his season concerts.

Hyderabad Brothers has a comml release to their credit where along with other kritis, they have sung this sadAchalEshwaram. IIRC, Sri Raaja GOpAlam (Saveri), Dharmasavardhini(MadhyamAvathi), PaamaralOchani(Simmendra madhyam) were also in that Audio Cassettee.

The cassette referred to by Sindhu (Hys Bros) is an outstanding one and thoroughly recommended. Incidentally I have not heard any of the old masters render this...any pointers?

Vijay,
Whenever I hear sadAcalESvaram, i think of the way the bros sang it beautifully in the US in their maiden tour years ago.I had not heard it before which means it wasn't hat widely sung. I don't hear it that much now either.

By the way, I suppose you are extremely busy with your move. That's why no reviews, or even special day greetings!

Needs a bump up, considering that we're discussing bhUpALam right now.
