Practising with thambura

Post by saraswathy »

Greetings to all.
I've heard almost all performing artists stressing the need to strum a manual thambura while practicing.
I'm a Carnatic music enthusiast learning Carnatic music for the last 3 years to better appreciate it. I'm currently practicing with Raagini electronic thambura and I've been thinking about buying a manual thambura for a while now.

1. Is manual thambura necessary? Will it improve my music (and voice)?

2. Miraj style or Tanjore style? Which one is better?

3. How about these new small flat thamburas? Are they good? Being in USA these small ones are great convenience.

4. Do you know of shops or contacts who sell quality thamburas and ship them to USA?

Thanks and regards,
Saraswathy
