Post by venkatakailasam »

Kalaimamani Smt. D.Pattammal was a musician, musicologist and Vageyakara. Born in Lalgudi and brought up in Tanjore she has composed over 650 songs in Tamil and is one of the few vageyakaras to compose songs in all the melakartha ragas...
A web site has been opened a coupe of days back...

http://www.dpattammal.com/

Her compositions in eight books are available here..
Audio of some of her compositions are rendered by TMK and others..can be listened...

"In all she has composed 658 songs in Tamil, which includes a song in Panchanadai, Songs in Drimadhyamam, and songs in rare ragas like Rukmambari and Sukapavani."
Is it not '-Dwimadhyama ragas- meaning (melakartha ragas)in which both Ma..s are present?
* I can not foget the scholarly Lec-Dem of dwimadhayama ragas with her kriti)(If I remember right) by TSK with Meera Sivaramakrishnan supporting him ably in Violin in MA longback. In fact ,that was the time when We folks started to know about that great vaggeyakara.
*SKA S.Rajam would refer her name invariably in all lectures on melakartha ragas.

Yes, many artists have rendered her songs. e.g. TRS popularized her " swAmi kandhasAmi" in Bilahari.
T S Kalyanaraman also has sang her songs.( he tuned her dwi-madhyama songs)

You can hear many others singing her songs in the Audio section of the Website.

Her husband Dr. Dhandapani was a Veterinary Doctor and they both lived in T.Nagar, Chennai , very close to my home; nice couple.

D. Pattammal's son Sri D. Chandrasekhar (who is a good family friend) organizes an annual kutcheri event that features her compositions. Past performers include TM Krishna, Nithyasree, Abhishek & Gayathri Venkataraghavan. The event is usually in the late summer and is held at the Vani mahal auditorium.

Some of these concerts have been reviewed here by Rajeshnat and others (see for e.g. this concert from 2012 http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic. ... l+abhishek)

I remember Sri S.Rajam telling me about a concert arranged to demonstrate D .Pattammal's Melakartha Songs..esp her Vivadhi Raga-songs. He told me that TRS, T S Kalyanaraman and he were the singers.
It would be so great if a recording of that event is available and is uploaded in that Tribute-Site.
