Memorable Odissi

Post by Rsachi »

Dear Rasikas,
the Malleshwaram auditorium, Sevasadan, bursting with rasikas, today witnessed some stupendous Odissi. The first artiste Sonali Mohapatra has overcome near-total deafness to become a great Odissi dancer. Her pallavi (Chakravak) and Kede Chanda (Misra Piloo) had some intricate laya and great choreography. She did an incredible depiction of Putana's episode.
The next was Bijoyini Satpathy- perhaps the best Odissi dancer today in the world- from Nrityagram. She did three pieces: a wordless abhinaya of a woman admiring her own beauty to the point when she realises that it is meaningful only when expressed as an offering to lord Krishna. The second one was the asthapadi Priye Charusheele in Charukeshi. Then came the Tulsi Ramayan episode of Sitaharan in Desh. Wonderful live music, extraordinary perfection in nritta and lasya, and the karuna rasa in Sita's plight - all had the audience on its feet in applause. Jai Ho Bengaluru!
