Journey, creative and fulfilling:
There's no art without expressions. And expressions do not mean just facial. It's the body language...

Wasn't Kalanidhi Ganapati (as she was then) the first 'brahmin' girl to dance on a stage?

I think in one of the books on the history of bharatanATyam, it says, Kalanidhi first, followed by Lakshmi Sastri (later Shankar).

i went to mami for classes in abhinaya for 2 years.....she is such a wonderful lady.... a treasure house of knowledge and such a dedicated teacher...she wont stop until we do a padam to her satisfaction.
no 2 individuals are the same... likewise no 2 artistes need to interpret the same padam in the same manner... the underlying theme of each padam or javali is important. u may do the padam as u like but the emotions in the undercurrent should be maintained.
this piece of advice was what she used to give us over and over again.
she never stopped us from improvising...or incorporating anything impromptu so long as it kept the thread going and matched with the theme.

swaykv can vouch for this.....right, swaykv??
mami is such a wonderful artiste and great teacher and such a humble person.
no doubt everyone one of her student is, today,a name to reckon with in dance..especially abhinaya....i bow my head to the living legend...
