I know even less about Kathakali music than carnatic --- but it has a most amazing sound and quality; almost mesmerising. No. It is mesmerising :)

Kathakali music has its own charm. CM ragas like Mukhari, Anandabhairavi have a different 'feel' to them in a Kathakali performance. I remember attending Kathakali in nearby temples growing up in Kerala, and I must say the music and the abhinaya on stage were magical!

Perhaps someone can share recordings of Kathakali music with us, and you can see what I mean. I used to have a few on tape, but somehow can't find them any more...

An interesting article that may be of some relevance:

nick,it is indeed mesmerizing…..
I have attended plenty of full night kathakali performances in 80s and 90s It strats with mElaPadam, puraPadu, then the actual story, which starts with pacha vEsham(noble characters like arJuna, nala)then follows kathi(characers like duryOdhana,rAvana,kIchaka) I find this part most mesmerizing…when kathi vEsham comes to the stage, normally around mid night, starts with sringAra or pathinja padam in pAdi(not the carnatic pAdi)something one should experience oneself….
Jayaram, anada bhairavi is a very common in kathakali, normally associates with strI vesham. Here is a small clip from pUthanA mOksham ..sukumARa,nandakumArA,varika arikil mOdAl..sung by Sankaran embrandiri and late Venmani Haridas(incidentally,he was a pet student of Gangadharan, winner of this years sangeetha nataka academy award.)

Thank you RK, for that wonderful clip. It took me back to the times spent in Thrissur, listening to great kathakali music at the local temples...
Now I have this desperate urge to listen to more of this music...any help?
