Dheenanu Dukh HaraN ... Lyrics, Ragam, Talam etc

Post by Sundar Krishnan »

I would like to have the (Complete) Lyrics of Surdas comp :
Dheenanu Dukh HaraN ...

I could get Part-Lyrics in :
http://www.mayyam.com/talk/viewlite.php?t=2047
by Shri Lakshman dt 4/9/07.

In rasikas site, I have searched with the string : ""surdas", but without success for this comp.

I say Part-Lyrics above, because some stanzas seem to be probably missing - atleast wrt this song, uploaded at :
http://www.sendspace.com/file/0sorcn
I would like to know the Ragam and Taalam (if applicable) also specifically of the above uploaded Audio link.

Thanks in Advance (TIA).

Raga: Desh. Tala: It is in trisra nadai, 8 beat cycle, so in CM terms, we can call it Adi (trisra nadai).

Thanks Shri Lakshman and Shri V K Raman for the Lyrics.

Is there a link where we can see the script of this song Dheenanu in Sanskrit Lipi - Sanskrit is the best to know the proper diction {except that it lacks certain additional alphabets that are special for Tamil like "zh", 2nd R, 2nd lower "n" etc}.

*****************

vasantakokilam, Thanks for the Ragam = Desh, Taalam = Adi, Tishra Nadai.

While we are on this Ragam Identification, I would like to draw attention to the 3 other similar requests for Ragam identification of the Song (as well as the Viruttam if it is diff) in the foll specific uploaded audio files :

1) Viruttam “Shri KAnto MAtulo? Yasya Janani Sarva MangaLa ... ?”, and the following “Shambhu Natanam Stotram” :
http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=11085 - Posts # 5 & 6

2) Viruttam “kara charaNa” and the following “MArga-Bandhu Stotram” : “shaMbho mahAdeva ...” :
http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=17797

3) "Prabhum PrANanAtham" and "Brahma MurAri SurArchita Lingam" :
http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=17711 - Posts # 13 & 19

I request that the Ragams & Taalams for the above 3 be given in their resp threads.

TIA

I posted my impressions on the raga and thala for 'shaMbho mahAdeva' in the other thread. I do not have anything to add for the other two.

Till Krishnaa gives us a word-to-word translation, here's something from the net to start with :

(Deenan dukh haran Dev, santan hitkaari) translation from Sunil Uniyal.

O Lord, You relieve the poor of their misery,

You do good to the faithful.

Ajamil, vulture and the hunter- who was not the fallen one?

and the whore who made the parrot learn and speak-

You have uplifted them all.

You put the crown on Dhruva's head and took Prahlad in Your embrace.

You laid a bridge on the sea and had the city of Lanka burnt

for your devotee Vibhishan's sake.

You took delight in the handful of rice (offered by Sudama)

and the simple vegetarian fare (at Vidur's home).

You didn't mind eating (from the hands of the Bhil woman Sabari)

the forest fruits- whether sweet, sour or salty.

When the elephant was in the clutch of the water-monster,

or when Dushaasan tried to disrobe Draupadi

and she cried out 'Krishna, Krishna' in the assembly,

You proved true to Your name by coming quick to their rescue.

Surdas, the blind beggar, is at Your doorstep, O Lord,

hoping that You'll protect him, too.

Very sorry to be away.... was on a trip back home...
Shyama, thanks for the meaning!!!
Here is my trial on the word to word meaning...

dInan dukh haran dEv santan hitakAri
O Lord (dev)! Your nature is that of excavating (haran) the sorrow (dukh) of the distressed (dInan). You are the ever well -wisher and doer (hitakArI) for the saintly beings (santan).

ajAmil gIdh vyAdh in mE kahO kaun sAdh
panchI kO pad paDAt gaNikA sI tArI
Among (in mE) ajAmila, jaTAyu the vulture (gIdh) and the hunter (vyAdh), who (kaun) can be said (kahO) to have done any pious activity (sAdh)? More over a prostitue like (si) ganikA was redeemed (tArI) by merely teaching (paD paDAt) a bird (panchhI)!

dhruv kE sir chhatr dEt prahlAd kO ubAr lEt
bhakt hEt bAndhyO sEtu lank purI jArI
You provided (det) your devotee dhruv with the royal umbrella (chhatra) over his head (sir) [i.e. Sri hari blessed Dhruv to be the king of the entire universe for a number of years]. You always redeemed (ubAr) prahlAd. For the sake (het) of your devotees (bhakt) you built (bAndhyo) a bridge (setu) across the sea and burnt/annhilated (jArI) the city of lankA.

tandul dEt rIjh jAt sAg pAtasO na aghAt
ginat nahi jUThE phal khATE mIThE khArI
You simply get(jAt) pleased (rIjh) by an offering (det) of chipped rice (tandul) [referring to the kucela episode], and you never get satisfied (na aghAt) with the leafy (pAta) vegetables (sAg) [referring to the instance when the Lord had a meal at the house of Vidura]. You did not count (ginat nahi) the tasted (jUTHe) fruits (phal), you accpted them regardless of whether they were sour (khATe) or sweet (mITHe) or even bitter (khArI).

gaj kO jab grAh grasyO duhshAsan cIr khasyO
sabhA bIc krSN krSN draupadI pukArI
When (jab) the elephant king (gaj) was captured (grasyo) by the crocodile (grAh), when the evil duhshAsan got hold (khasyo) of her clothes (cIr), amidst (bIca) the whole gathering (sabhA), draupadI called (pukArI) for you - kRSNa! kRSNa!

itanE hari Ai gayE basnan ArUD bhayE
sUrdAs dvArE ThADO AndharO bhikArI
at that instant (itane), O srI hari! you arrived (Ai gaye) and assumed the form of her cloth (basan)! O Lord! This blind (Andharo) beggar (bhikhArI) sUrdAs is today standing (THADO) at your doorstep (dvAre) [so please have mercy on me toO!]

I hope that helps....
Once again, sorry for the delay!

Krishnaa, welcome back, and thank you for the explanation. I have a few questions:
1. What is the story of the prostitute and the bird?
2. Who is the devotee for whom the bridge to lankA was built? I thought that the bridge was built for the Lord himself.
3. What does (basan) ArUD bhayE mean?

Thanks alot Ravi!!

here are the answers...

1. Ganika was a prostitute who taught her parrot to say 'rAma'. The parrot would repeat the Lord's name throughout the day. And because of constant hearing of rAma nAma and reciting it with the parrot, she got liberated. I will confirm for the reference of this story from the puranas and let you know.

2. The devotee in this case is Devi Sita and Vibhishana

3. ArUD literally means to climb. The whole line means that Krishna got onto the sari in order to make it un-ending.

Is it more clear now? Hope the answers help.
