Anyayamu seyakura
Anyayamu seyakura is a known Tyagaraja kriti in Kapi. Don't recall hearing it in a concert myself, but I know it's there. Sangeethapriya has three versions of it on the Tyagaraja page, a rapid fire one by M.D.Ramanathan, a brisk one by Nedunuri Krishnamurthy and a slower one, leisurely developed, by T.R.Subramaniam. Then there is one somewhere else by Ramnad Krishnan which is medium paced, but in a completely different mould. Even the start for both the pallavi and anupallavi is different from the other three that I mentioned, and overall it sounds like a cross between Darbar and Kanada. Ramnad has mangled the lyrics quite a bit, as he is prone to do sometimes! But my question is whether the Ramnad version is in the mysterious Karnataka Kapi? Also, how can one song have so many different versions and pathantarams? A beautiful song, mind you. I was mesmerised by the TRS version, especially the stepwise development in the caranam.

Having so many pathantarams for the same composition is the greatness of our Karnataka music as every artist of them claims as the 3rd or 4th or 5th or 6th ..…….. descendant of Great Thyagaraja himself but sings different kinds of notations. In western music, while they have, long long ago, standardized each and every aspect of their music, pitiably enough, none of our stalwarts had ever standardized our Gamaka-system at all. More over, all our great stalwarts tell giving notation to the students is not Sampradaya at all as per the Great Gurukula system. That is why, successfully maintaining the same, in no Music College or the Music Department of any University ever bothers about providing text books for music students. Many of the Professors of these departments even openly expressed that they discourage providing Cassettes or CDs as, in such case, the students skip of attending their classes. Thus, they all are afraid that they may not get their salaries if their students do not attend the classes. Naturally, getting their salaries regularly is far more important than sincerely, honestly and truthfully giving music to their students. Most surprisingly, in my 35 years of long Government service, there was not even a single academic inspection and this obviously reveals the sad state of affairs of our Karnataka-music. amsharma

The inspector not trying to Inspect your work , is fully understandable . He must have seen you from a distance.
And got scared of you . ;(
I pity him . He did not hear you singing for 8 hours at a stretch - a rare disctinction that I was privilege to .
I will never forget that day in the ambassador taxi , for the rest of my life.

We travelled whole day , when we had arranged the concert of Toronto Brothers . Going from place to place . We even had breakfast in New woodlands . You sat in the front seat because you wanted to enjoy looking around . And went from song to song , the whole day .
All my life I have come across only three persons , who are never silent . They either speak and when not speaking something , are singing / humming . Yourself , Manakkal Rangarajan and my friend Raju Asokan , when he was with me in Chennai some years back.Singing nonstop and interrupting it only for speaking . 24 * 7 of your waking life . You are all indeed blessed . I can only playback in my mind |(
