Hi,
I got these links from a posting in Sangeetham.com: they were posted as Madurai Shanmukavadivu (Smt. MSS's mother) singing and playing the veena in response to a querry by 'ninja'.

My question is this: is this really Shanmukavadivu singing, or is this a very young MSS singing with her mother as accompaniment? A point against this being MSS is that I have heard that she used to sing at an impossibly high pitch when she was younger! CML, can you weigh in?
Thanks.
Ravi

Shankar

I have heard Shanmugavadivu playing veena; never sing. There were 78rpm of her singing. Nothing spectacular! These recordings do sound like that period (30's) but not definitely MS who who had a very high pitched voice at that time. To those who are used to modern day concerts most of the singign in the pre-microphone days will sound extremely artificial since they tried to throw their voice especially in the drama-style. There was a mountain of a difference in SSI in the 30's vs 50's. Also harmonium used to be a ppular accompaniment in those days and in my view CM was much closer to HM in those days even in the aalap and 'bOl'. Many of the old recordings of BGAK remind me of Chembai in those days! perhaps my addiction for HM stems from my love of the 20's and 30's CM!

dear ravishankar,
i have been an avid bhakta of Smt M.S.S. since the age of 3 years and know quite abit about her life histroy. for one, the first recording, Nannu Brochuta is indeed a recdng of Madurai Veena Shanmukhavadivu, mother of M.S.Subbulakshmi. the vocals heard alongwith the veena are Shanmukhammal herself singing along as she played, in the old style of playing veena, viz-a-viz Veena Dhanammal. the second recdng is a bit of a mystery. its for sure that it is neither M.S.' mother nor M.S. singing. it seems that there was another lesser known Shanmukhavadivu (not necesarily from Madurai), who was a vocalist, whose recdng it is. hope that cleared all doubts.
