The vaara kritis of 18th century composer Muthuswamy Dikshitar are dedicated to the celestial bodies Surya, chandra, Angaraka, Budha, Brhaspati, Sukra and Sanaischara. These kritis show Dikshitar's familiarity with jyotisha sastra, mythology and other bodies of INdian traditional. Located in Tamilnadu near Kumbhakonam is a set of 9 temples that constitute the popular navagraha temple circuit. This lecture demonstration explores the 7 vaara kritis of Dikshitar, the relationship between the kritis, the mythology and the celestial bodies and the temples.
