The function started exactly by 18 00 hrs, S/Shri Murali, Prof SRJ, Dr. Ramanathan and Dr. Pappu Rao decorated the podium. Dr. Pappu Rao welcomed the gathering. There were only 40 rasikas present.
Papu Rao
Prof. SRJ needs no introduction. This is the 3rd edition and again MA has started publication worik after a lapse of 10 yrs.
Shri Murali released the book and the 1st copy was received by Dr, Ramanathan the prime desciple of SRJ. then by SRJ and Pappu rao. In his speech he mentioned the follwing points.
Shri Murali
This is a very significant occasion since MA is resorted to publication after a gap of 10yrs. The 3 vols earlier released as 1st edition by 1995, 2nd by 2000 and this 3rd edition now. Lot of changes and improvements have been made in this edition and this will be explained by Dr. Ramanathan who is his disciple since 25 yrs. SRJ got himself registered as a research scholar in musicology at Tirupathi. He has written many books and given lec dems . he has lot of disciples and the depth of his knowledge is amazing. This attributes to his rigarous training in Kalakshetra , Tiger and Musiri. He got trained in musicology under Prof Sambamoorthy. He is an authority in classical music. He is a complete musician and musicologist needs to be a musician. MA is republishing this edition and happy on the revival of this assignment. Smt shobana swaminathan helped SRJ in this endevour by assisting in proof reading and other associated work on this edition.
Shri Murali presented with Ponnadai and a purse as a token of his services.
Dr. Ramanathan
His speech was in tamil. He is happy to receive the 1st copy as his student. Raga lakshanams are discussed in this edition in depth and authoritatively in his own style. Sangeetha sampradaya pradarshini -- subbarama deekshathar is fully explained and this is an unique method and no books explain like this.
giruham, niyasam and melam are fully dealt in this. Mayamalava gowla , atana, kethara gowla, asaveri, aahiri ,manjari and aberi are completely discussed and explained.
Dr. Pappu rao.
He is a teacher , musician, musicologist and a scholarly writer. This is a rare opportunity for Shobana to learn from Prof SRJ. He is having every minute details in his finger tips . In this edtion more discussions about ragas than explanation. Janaka raga need not be a melam. Each vol discusses 50 ragas in each
Vol 1. melakartha
2 Ragas handled by Thyagaraja
3. Rare ragas viz dheepa kantham, supradeepam etc . and prathapavarali as handled by Thyagaraja.
His statements are sweeping and strong, substatiated by proper authority.
Prof SRJ is known for making statements which cannot be easily acceptable.
Prof SRJ
He is in a dilemma in which language his speech should be. Dr. Ramanathan has completely digested the 3 vols . Things should happen at appropriate time and by the efforts of Shri Murali this was made possible.
Then he spoke for few seconds in telugu as he was allotted only 4 mts by Pappu for his acceptance speech.
His first entry into MA was in 1954 for a sub senior concert. Dr. V. Raghavan made him as one of the members of experts comittee in 1978 and he is holding this position till now. Ambiguity is no chance in his statements and this made him unpopular. He is sincere to classic music and its beauty. His father was his 1st Guru and a very strict disciplinarian and showed him the right path. In 1954 when he started singing abhogi varnam Dr. Raghavan wanted him to sing vanajakshi in kalyani as Tiger would do.
He thanked the MA for its services .
This was followed by E. Gayathri's vina concert supported by Tiruchur narendran and TV Vasan.
IMHO the response by audiance was very poor as there were only 40 to 50 rasikas. Finally ' A humble request' to our forum. Any one in close assoication with Prof SRJ can make him to give Lec dem this season on Ganam singing.
