I'm surprised there isn't a thread already about this favourite ragam of mine. In particular, the elongated rishabam taken from the gandharam, brushing the madhyamam evocatively before ascending, is very moving. Even simple prayogas like RMGR,,, ; RMP,,,MGR,,,, ; RMPNDP- PDP,,,MGR,,, ; RPMMGR,,,, ; R,,, R,,, R,,, RSNDPNS R,,,, can be so beautiful. Any phrase that emphasises the rishabam in this ragam is particularly lovely, and the panchamam too I find is an important note. A raga that lends itself for vilamba kala exploration and singing, and with so many beautiful krithis like tuLasi bilva (my favourite), sAmikku sari evvarE, saraguNa pAlimpa, nIlakaNTam. It can be sung elaborately as well, but doesn't seem to be favoured very much as a main item these days. In my listening experience, vidwans like Nedunuri, SSI, MDR, and TMK have handled this raga very well, with my personal favourite individual renditions (which I shall post soon) being an RTP by SSI-LGJ-UKS and tuLasi bilva sung by NRK and MDR. Although an emphasis on the rishabam can almost guarantee to please the listener, this is a difficult raga to sing because exploration can rapidly get repetitive with the singer perhaps feeling compelled to stay within the vicinity of the rishabam all the time to preserve the bhAvam of the raga. In so doing, phrases with the nishadam and dhaivatam seem to be neglected at times. Although I have heard raga alapanai and kalpanaswaras quite frequently in this ragam, I have not heard very many neravals--I wonder why. It is a raga that is also favoured in viruTTam/ slOkam singing, and rightly so.

I welcome others' impressions on this beautiful ragam (also from those who don't particularly like it; someone once told me he found the ragam quite boring)...

Let us start with a vandana slOkam..

Every kathakali performance starts with the recital of vandana slokam 'mAtangAnana..' this is sung in kEdAragauLa.

Here is one sample..

That is a beautiful slOkam, braindrain. Thank you. Effectively captures the beauty of KG.
What is a "vandana" slokam?

Surely this must be followed by DKP/DKJ's rendition of the varNam, sAmi dayajUda?

My all-time favorite - Jalajanabha by MDR. Wonderful usage of the Rishabam as you mentioned.

I have a soft corner for this raga, since the first varnam I learnt happened
to be the KG varnam (by accident, I know this isn't normally taught first).

SSI has indeed practically exhausted this raga in his RTP, which must
surely go down as one of the all-time great renditions in any raga. Also
like the delectable Kshetrayya padam "bhAmArO" and Ariyakudi's
Saraguna Palimpa. And there's a sparkling little sketch of Kedaragoula
buried in one of GNB's recorded viruttams. Interestingly, think this is
GNB's only easily available recorded KG (I could be wrong) -- don't think
GNB has recorded other major kritis in this raga.

A rAgam made for bringing out bhAvam. Though not that popular these days, it was a viruttam staple.

kEdAragauLai for me is saraguNapAlimpa (Smt. MSS' version - absolutely sparkling version from when she was much younger I presume, in a CD called Old Gems or something like that) and viTTuviDaDA sItaiyai (also Smt. MSS' version) - both are haunting, both pleading, with the latter packing an 'or else' into it!

Tyagaraja's vanaja nayana and siggumaali are grand compositions - have cherished memories of learning the latter composition from the radio lesson by Smt. R. Vedavalli.. wonder if those Sunday evening half-hour sessions are still on at Vaanoli..

Sorry! I do not have an audio file immediately available to upload. I will try to get one.

Sri. Jayadeva's 11th Ashtapadi " Rati Sukha sArE .....deerasameerE yamuna teerE..."is sung in this rag in Sampradhaya Bhajan. Tanjavoor Sri. Thyagarajan had sung this Ashtapadi very melodiously. Sri. OS Sundar and Sri. Udayaloor Kalyanaraman too had sung well this 11th Ashtapadi in their music Albums and is worth listening.

This raga evokes so much Bhakti while listening to and always a favorite raga to me. Viruthams in this raga are very popular both in Bhajans as well as in the Katcheries. This raga shines well when sung with full
of ' bhava' and in slow tempo.

Radhe Krishna!

Dear rasikas,

Here is one more rare kriti in kedaragowla, composed by Rallapalli Ananthakrishna sharma; lyrics
" Ganarasamurti Tyagaraju patalu ....." this is a composition in praise of Sadguru Tyagaraja, and was regularly being sung during Tygaraja Aradhana, in Mysore ages ago ! This song can be heard at the link

http://sites.google.com/site/rallapalli ... Home/media

Sl No 4 & 4A on this page. The song is rendered in a concert by Rallapalli's son Prof R A Phani Shayi, former principal & professor of psychology, National College, B'lore.

A most beautiful Kedaragowla can be found in three-four lines of a song in the movie "Auvayyar" - the old one - the lines start with "Anbile Ninainda Yennai".

Another most beautiful Kedaragowla is part of a ragamalika that followed Shri MMI's Shanmukapriya RTP - "SaravanaBhava" - most captivating - entrancing.

I was searching Rasika's website for difference between Suruti and Kedaragowlai. Can anyone explain the difference between Suruti and Kedaragowlai? I am student of music and learnt recently Venugana in Kedaragowlai.

Just peeped into this thread. The discussion is incomplete without reference to MSS expansive raga alapana of this ragam in innumerable concerts- Mostly Saraguna palimpa or Venuganaloluni. She has sung some sparkling swaras in Vikasita pankajamu in Venugana loluni. Also she has recorded a very beautiful song Koluvude in KG - in the Balaji Pancharathnamala Vol 5- a composition of Annamacharya with breathtaking chittaswaras by Kadayanallur Venkatraman.

A must listen to -TNS detailed alapana of this ragam mostly for Saragunapalimpa. He has also sung many RTPs in this ragam. TRS mangalam in KG- Maramachandruniki (Thyagaraja) - simply haunting.
