Interesting concept. But it will be interesting to see how many serious music enthusiasts will make the trip down there, traffic and all, to *just* listen to some music.
I hope they provide some really nice noise canceling head phones to block out the noise around. I can just visualize each listener humming a different ragam and it is going to be comical.
But the effort is commendable.

Good initiative, when Sampradaya in Madras did the same in late 90's, I used to go there with my own headphones that were of a higher quality than that was provided with the walkman. The gentleman there didn't have a problem with that. I am sure you can take your own noise-cancelling headphones to enjoy the music!!

It's a good beginning. But why stop here? With 6000 hours of music available, why restrict it so much - only people living within traveling distance of the academy could possibly hope to hear these treasures.
I wish they can sort out the copyright issues, if any, and start selling these either as CDs, or even better, through itunes or some other internet service. With so much content available, they should be able to survive a bit of piracy, and still turn a profit as well as get the music to more ears.
